As a 10 year-old boy working alongside Mexican workers in a Hollywood, Calif., poultry processing plant owned by his father, Cardinal Roger Mahony said he felt terrorized when the border patrol raided the business one day and intimidated workers with their guns.
It was one of many experiences that made Mahony, the Roman Catholic archbishop of Los Angeles, the church's most outspoken advocate on behalf of immigration reform. Wednesday night he spoke about the issue to students, professors and fellow Catholics during a lecture at UNC Chapel Hill's FedEx Global Education Center.
Stories such as the one he told might open people's hearts and minds to the plight of the 11 million illegal immigrants in the United States and help bring into public view the need for reforms, he said. Mahoney, who will retire next month as head of the nation's largest archdiocese, visited the state for the first time at the invitation of sociology professor Jacqueline Hagan, who studies migration between Latin America and the U.S.
The cardinal said that while the U.S. happily employs illegal immigrants, it fails to offer them legal protections.
"We gladly accept the toil and taxes of the immigrant work force to fill our economic needs," he said, "but look the other way when they are exploited in the workplace, die in the desert, or are arrested and deported for the most minor of civil violations."

“Cardinal Roger Mahony said he felt terrorized”
Whenever you ask a Liberal what they think they begin with, “I feel - - - “.
They don’t think.

I am calling BullChit on the Cardinal.
If those workers were ‘ intimidated” by ICE with guns it is because they were illegal.
I doubt the story of the 10 y o completely.
but it makes a nice story for the vile cardinal to spout

Stuff it, Your Excellency. I'm sick of your tunnel-vision compassion. You bleed for the illegal who's getting food stamps, free medical care, etc., and have no compassion whatsoever for the hard-working American whose taxes pay for all that beneficence. I think it's time for you to enter a monastery and spent your time in contemplation. Just remember, Hell is paved with the skulls of bishops.

I don’t ‘gladly accept the toil’ of those working here illegally. I’d like to hire a roofing company for a small job but cannot find one where the owner can give me a straight answer if his workers are legally authorized to work in the US.
I even once refused free labor from someone working illegally in the US (against the terms of her visa.) She was disgusted at the sanitation of my bachelor restroom and offered to clean it. I told her ‘no way, tu eres mi novia no mi criada.’

If you have time you might you want to catch this show. What would You do. ABC Sets Up Sting Operation to Find Racism in AZ Immigration Law, Hires Actor to Play a Bigot ABC and reporter John Quinones on Thursday stretched the bounds of journalism, hiring an actor to play a racist security guard as a way of testing how the people of Arizona would react to the state's "anti-immigration law." Previewing the network's "What Would You Do?" segment for Friday's 20/20, Quinones explained the undercover concept: "So, I go undercover, pretending to be someone who is about to be arrested and deported, simply by the way I look." The piece featured a cartoonish "security guard" harassing Mexican actors in Tucson, Arizona. Presumably, ABC chose a security guard because impersonating a police officer is illegal. The actor walked into a restaurant and spewed, "I'm just looking to make sure these guys are legal citizens. And if they're not legal citizens, they shouldn't be here. They should be deported. They look Mexican." Of course, having this man pretend to be a security guard really makes no sense. (A security guard is going to deport people?) Secondly, for journalists that often attack conservative sting operations, it's rather odd to see ABC manipulate such a scenario. The Radio, Television and Digital News Association ethics guide states: "Use surreptitious newsgathering techniques, including hidden cameras or microphones, only if there is no other way to obtain stories of significant public importance and only if the technique is explained to the audience." Was this the only way ABC could do such a story? Previewing the segment, Quinones misstated what Arizona's law actually is. He asserted, "So, we took our cameras down to Arizona, where a controversial, new law would give police the authority to question and perhaps deport anyone who, in their eyes, appears to be in the U.S. illegally." This is false. Byron York of the Washington Examiner explained in an April 26, 2010 column: Critics have focused on the term "reasonable suspicion" to suggest that the law would give police the power to pick anyone out of a crowd for any reason and force them to prove they are in the U.S. legally. Some foresee mass civil rights violations targeting Hispanics. What fewer people have noticed is the phrase "lawful contact," which defines what must be going on before police even think about checking immigration status. "That means the officer is already engaged in some detention of an individual because he's violated some other law," says Kris Kobach, a University of Missouri Kansas City Law School professor who helped draft the measure. "The most likely context where this law would come into play is a traffic stop." After playing clips of the "security guard" arguing with patrons as he harassed Mexicans, Quinones lectured, "And what we kept hearing over and over from folks was that they all knew about the anti-immigration law. What they didn't realize until we staged our scenario was how it might affect innocent people, Latinos, George who are in this country legally." Notice the use of "anti-immigration" rather than anti-illegal immigration. A previous "What Would You Do?" segment featured "ugly Americans" in Paris. In January of 2009, overweight and wearing George W. Bush t-shirts, these actors showcased obnoxious behavior in Europe. Quinones smeared, "They're the ugly Americans. And for more than a century, they've been fixtures in American literature and film." A transcript of the February 3 segment, which aired at 7:44am EST, follows: Story Continues Below Ad ↓ Read more: http://www.newsbusters.org/blogs/scott-whitlock/2011/02/03/abc-sets-sting-operation-find-racism-az-immigration-law-hires-actor-#ixzz1CwWiSl1l

The Catholic Church’s coddling of and encouragement for illegals has been disgusting. It makes sense in that most illegals are Catholic but it is still pathetic and despicable.

Might I suggest you take the time to learn the difference between prudential statements made by people like Mahony and the actual teaching of the Church on immigration.

Might I suggest the Catholic Church tell archbishops to be careful about inserting personal political opinions not shared by the Catholic Church into public speeches?

"We gladly accept the toil and taxes of the immigrant work force to fill our economic needs," he said, "but look the other way when they are exploited in the workplace, die in the desert, or are arrested and deported for the most minor of civil violations." He doesn't say if any of those immigrants working for being exploited by his father were illegal. I'm guessing they were. So, what I gather is his family is to blame for our current flood of illegal immigrants. I always heard that things start in California and move East. Wonder how many poooooor Hispanics died in the desert so they could work for be exploited by his father. His family didn't want to pay Americans a living wage to do the job. I know before the illegal Hispanics came to Dalton, Georgia, the poultry processing plant employed black and white Americans.
