BATON ROUGE -- Attorney General James "Buddy" Caldwell announced Wednesday that he is switching to the Republican Party, culminating a dramatic reversal-of-fortune for a Democratic Party that had dominated Louisiana politics for more than a century.
Caldwell's switch leaves U.S. Sen. Mary Landrieu as Louisiana's only statewide elected official, and it means Republicans are in charge of all seven constitutional offices in state government. As recently as 2004, the party held both of Louisiana's U.S. Senate seats and six of the seven constitutional offices.
Caldwell said he switched because he feels more comfortable with the GOP's positions on local and national issues, and he cited last year's federal health care law as an example.

Pelican State ping
He ran for office as a Democrat and won as a Democrat, and now all he is doing is telling us he's going to run the next time as a Republican.
If you don't want RINOs in the party telling real Republicans how to do it you gotta' stop this guy at the primaries.
If you don't then you are a RINO lover!
Let’s see: the GOP controls the Governorship, almost all state offices and the State House. All the Democrats still control is the Senate and the Landrieu family seat.
Never trust a party switcher.
The last white Southern conservative Democrats are abandoning the party. There are a few white liberals and the rest of the Democrats are black in the South.
I heard this on the radio last week he was going to turn. Looks like he made it a reality.
“The last white Southern conservative Democrats are abandoning the party. There are a few white liberals and the rest of the Democrats are black in the South.”
It’s about DAMN TIME. I don’t know about this guy, but a LOT of the southern local Democrats are very conservative (even more so than Howard Baker, LOL) - how they held out in that demented party is just horrible.
The Dems have pretty much driven white men and white married women out of their sick party - and that is why they’re FINALLY getting their clocks cleaned. They’re pretty much left with blacks, a slight majority of Hispanics, gays, lesbo’s, and 40 year old single women (with cats). They’re finding that the numbers just don’t add up.
Not to worry about the state Senate - it will go GOP in November and the GOP will increase its House majority and the GOP should rack up landslide wins for state offices and in cities and parishes outside New Orleans. The only statewide Democrat who be left is Landrieu. She’s good as gone in 2014 and the seat will go GOP.
Primary is a$$ and elect a REAL republican.
He was the only state Democratic attorney general who sued to stop Obamacare. He could read which way the political winds are blowing in LA. AS recently as 2004 the Dems had a political hammerlock on the state. The only Southern state still resisting the GOP trend is AR.
“Shes good as gone in 2014 and the seat will go GOP.”
I don’t know have you seen the apartments they are building for her voters in NOLA. Once they see these digs they will be returning full speed ahead.
The demographics have changed since Katrina. That’s why the Pelican State is turning Deep Red. Today the Dems no longer have a farm bench.
Perhaps you're right about Louisiana AG Caldwell; perhaps you're not. I don't know anything about him, and I doubt you do either. But that's not the point of my reply.
I notice that you are from Indiana and Connecticut, respectively. While you might understand politics in the Midwest and New England quite well, it is apparent that you don't understand much at all about the political history and culture of the South. If you did, you'd realize how Conservative the Democrat Party in the South used to be -- more Conservative than most of the old GOP itself. And you'd realize that if it weren't for party switchers, there'd be no more than a handful of Republicans in the South today.
The good news is that the culture shift has finally swept through the rural South, through the last local bastions of conservative Democrats. You could see it coming, because these people voted with Republicans in national races while they fought to preserve their local parties. Some began to leave in the 1980s, more left in the 1990s, and even more in the 2000s. Now the last stubborn holdouts have given up the fight for what was once "their" party, and have crossed over. The result could not be clearer: a stark contrast between Conservatives in the GOP against a weakened Democrat coalition of urban white socialists and government-dependent Blacks.
Huh. Coulda sworn there was more than one.
Well said. If you’re familiar with LA you’re aware it had a worse than sleazy Dimocrat machine going for decades. Chicago had nothing on New Awlins and Baton Rouge. Even sweet Mary is probably still more conservative than many northeast RINO’s. Even so, with LA coming around and joining the rest of the South’s move to Pubbie, her days are likely numbered.
Though I understand ACORN is starting an national cat voter registration drive.
“Though I understand ACORN is starting an national cat voter registration drive.”
Of course, given that cats spend a lot of their time who knows where, for hours at a time, I’m sure that many become pregnant. ACORN, and their Democrat puppet-masters, should have no problem organizing them by dangling “the right to choose”.
‘Never trust a party switcher.’
Like Ronald Reagan?
The cat we used to have before the coyotes ate it spent a fair amount of his day licking his anus. So I think you got a point.
