Detroit Tigers first baseman Miguel Cabrera was arrested Wednesday night on suspicion of drunken driving and resisting arrest charges in Florida.
Cabrera's car was seen by police on the side of the road and the engine block was smoking. When police stopped to assist, Cabrera was seen talking to himself and cursing. He was also drinking from a bottle of James Buchanan scotch.
The incident occured about 110 miles away from Lakeland, Fl., the site of Tigers spring training. Cabrera was not scheduled to report for spring training until Saturday.
When officers tried to move Cabrera into their patrol car, he became uncooperative. He swore at the officers multiple times and repeatedly ran into the road with his hands up. After handcuffs were put on him, Cabrera pushed off one of the vehicles and into one of the officers. The officer used knee spikes to Cabrera's thigh to corral him and place him in the patrol car.
Cabrera refused to take a breath test and was booked early Thursday morning. He posted bond later that morning and was released from police custody.
Cabrera's teammate Carlos Guillen, who is in Florida recovering from an injury, talked with MLB.com about the incident. " I'm worried about him because he's got a lot of talent. He's got the potential to be a Hall of Famer one day. Sometimes you have people around you that are not good for you. You think they're your friends, but they're not really friends."
Your point is?
Another oveepaid mentally and imaginatively challenged idiot sports figure doing something stupid. Happens as long as we pay them those cool bills.
If he was Miguel Cabrera, local wino, which he probably what he would be without baseball, nobody would notice or care.
At least those are my observations.
Same fellow who beat his girlfriend or one of her relatives last year, as I recall.
He is a bad man who needs to be booted out of baseball.
He appears to be proud of himself. That is my point.
They’ll trade him to the Bengals. ;)
I doubt they’ll be able to convict on DUI if he was already out of the car when they arived and if they then witnesses him drinking scotch at the scene.
(”Your honor, the State has offered no evidence whatsoever which proves my client was intoxicated while he was operating the vehicle”)
Drunk in public conviction? Perhaps. DUI? I doubt it.
Question: why use knee spikes, as opposed to tasering him? I’m just wondering, is there a protocol for this situation..you never taze a suspect in handcuffs? Cabrera could have a severely bruised thight, miss most of spring training..( not that I care)
He is going to miss some of Spring training because he is probably going into rehab for a while. I care because it looked like a real good season for Tiger fans.
I agree. Tigers looked good this season..the AL Central is almost as tough as the AL EAST..I think the Yankees could actually MISS the playoffs this year...
“Same fellow who beat his girlfriend or one of her relatives last year, as I recall.”
I think that was Francisco Rodriguez of the Mets who beat up his father in law. Although, I recall that Cabrera was previously arrested for DUI either last year, or the year before.
At least the single malt is a step up from Ted Kennedy's Chivas.
Thanks. I don’t have time to keep up with the exact antics of thug-athletes. I do believe there is some spousal or girlfriend abuse in Cabrera’s recent illustrious history though....
Ooooooh, the good stuff!
“Cabrera was arrested in a similar incident at the end of the 2009 season.”
Miguel Cabrera has a drinking problem he needs to address. His teammates have always stated he’s a great guy until......Here’s hoping he gets the help he needs and gets his life back on track. He’s a Hall of Fame type player, but I would wish the same for him if he sold peanuts at the Stadium.
Agree 100% Well-stated cumbo78.
If his preference continues to be for the hard stuff, he’s goind to end up on the liver list.
