WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Senator John McCain on Thursday urged President Barack Obama to help broker a deal that would restore valuable trade benefits for Colombia, a stalwart U.S. friend still reeling from recent severe floods.

"We've kicked an ally while they're down and right when they need us most" by allowing the program to expire, the Arizona Republican said on the Senate floor.

"The president of the United States and White House should be weighing in on this," McCain said.

Why would we give MFN status to China, who steals our intellectual property, manipulates its currency, and works overtime to become a military rival to us, but deny free trade status to a country that has worked hard to overthrow the drug cartels at our behest and seeks to be a model of S. American capitalism?? ...which if you’ve looked lately is under severe attack in places like Venezuela, Bolivia, etc. This is labor union crap again; we’re afraid of losing manufacturing jobs to Colombia, but have no problem shipping them wholesale to China or India. All we’re doing is preventing American products from being competitive in Colombia. McCain is actually right for once.

Marxists are overrunning Latin America and we’re going to kick YET ANOTHER ally when they’re down.

Christ, we are so freaking stupid sometimes.

Columbia is a solid ally and non-Marxist country. We need to support them, help them grow their economy and turn back the Red Tide infecting CA & SA.

What is the proposed deal? Cut tariffs on Columbian coffee?

It would be smart geopolitics to do something like that in view of the fact that it’s one of the few non-Marxist Central American states.

I rarely agree with McCain, but this is one such instance. This is a successful Bush I initiative that Obama completely undermined for the sake of screwing an emerging capitalist ally.

The correct headline should be used, without commentary.

The Columbia Treaty is a good deal for both parties.

Is this the deal W Bush had all set up when he left office and 0buzzkill immediately scrapped? McCain is right for once. 0bastard slapped Columbia in the face as part of his Destroy America Campaign.
