Hartford, Conn. (AP) -- Officials say a junior officer at a Connecticut submarine base has received an honorable discharge after suing the Navy, saying his Quaker beliefs prevent him from participating in war.
. . .
As part of his honorable discharge, he will reimburse the Navy for his education.

Maybe, someone should have explained what military service meant, BEFORE he enrolled in the Naval Academy.

Didn’t he know he was Quaker and what their beliefs are BEFORE he joined the Navy?

Hmm, what a coincidence. There was an episode of JAG years ago about a Navy doctor who was coincidentally, a Quaker and almost mirrors the same situation in the story.

an honorable discharge???
my recollection is that in similar discharges is years past it was less than honorable - some type of general discharge.

Engign. Must have been a new ring knocker. How is he going to pay for 200,000 in education?

These are the same yokels who signed up for service back in the 90s when Clintoon was in office just to get money for college and then went apeshit when we got into Gulf War II.
“I didn’t sign up for this!” they say, but... you’re in... the military... the MILITARY. You trained for it. You may not have to use it, but if you do, you’re expected to fight.

I can think of another Quaker naval officer. He later became President.

If you are right, the saddest part is that some otherwise qualified and motivated individual didn’t get a slot because this POS took it. Sorry, but truth hurts sometimes.

I'm not so sure. Didn't I just see/read a news story where the military academies are bending all the rules to get more (less than qualified) minorities on board?

That’s nothing new IMO. There’s an English prof there who has been crusading on that issue, and it’s hard to disagree with him.

he will reimburse the Navy for his educationHow about his free room and board, his medical and dental care, his clothing allowance, and double that amount just because he's a loser.

As part of his honorable discharge, he will reimburse the Navy for his education. Well if they want to get rid of him then fine. I'm glad to see they're forcing him to pay for his education.

Exactly what did he think is the purpose and function of the US Navy?
Did he get the Navy recruiter’s office confused with the recruiting office seeking religious missionaries for Africa?

Quakers were allowed and have served in the military as Conscientious Objectors (CO). The CO’s were assigned to medical duties where they did not have to bear arms in combat. Some CO’s worked in EOD (explosive ordnance disposal). Apparently, the Navy doesn't feel it needs CO’s any more? I don't know what policy is in regard to them.
