I am surprised only in that I figured the Pirates would have at least tried to get a $Mill or $Two ransom out of them before creating shark bait out of them. Now all the Pirates got is this crappy boat and a couple of bible-thumping t-shirts. I think I heard elsewhere that the US Military was trying to make some rescue attempt when things went so horribly bad for these folks. I am guessing we’ll hear all about it soon. (NOT) I admire their ‘quest’ for adventure. They certainly got a boat load of that. But for them to either not understand or to ignore the extreme dangers that existed in the path of their course and to not chart another after the many past illustrations of what happens off the coast of Somalia is just not smart IMHO. What’s wrong with sailing around either coast of the USA as an adventure? This is an extremely dangerous world. If the only way to get your adventure pleasures is to stick your neck into a Pirate’s den, I can’t really muster up a whole lot of sympathy. I will pray for their families though.

If I was going to travel via boat in a heavy piracy area, I'd make sure of a few things:

  1. I'd be as heavily armed as possible, certainly at least with the most powerful rifles I could use effectively.
  2. I'd have a very very very fast boat. Hopefully fast enough to outrun pirates.
  3. I'd have the best communications equipment available.
  4. I'd try to travel in convoy with other vessels, if at all possible. Like US naval vessels, for instance.
In such a hazardous environment, if I couldn't do most or all of the above, I'd probably reconsider my boating expedition. When boating in general, it's good to observe such policies.

Wouldn't sticking close to the coast be a good idea as well?
