Iran's Nuclear Program Suffers Major Setback

TEHRAN, Iran -- In a major setback to Iran's nuclear program, technicians will have to unload fuel from the country's first atomic power plant because of an unspecified safety concern, a senior government official said.

The vague explanation raised questions about whether the mysterious computer worm known as Stuxnet might have caused more damage at the Bushehr plant than previously acknowledged. Other explanations are possible for unloading the fuel rods from the reactor core of the newly completed plant, including routine technical difficulties.

While the exact reason behind the fuel's removal is unclear, the admission is seen as a major embarrassment for Tehran because it has touted Bushehr -- Iran's first atomic power plant -- as its showcase nuclear facility and sees it as a source of national pride. When the Islamic Republic began loading the fuel just four months ago, Iranian officials celebrated the achievement.

Iran's envoy to the U.N. nuclear monitoring agency in Vienna said that Russia, which provided the fuel and helped construct the Bushehr plant, had demanded the fuel be taken out.

"Upon a demand from Russia, which is responsible for completing the Bushehr nuclear power plant, fuel assemblies from the core of the reactor will be unloaded for a period of time to carry out tests and take technical measurements," the semiofficial ISNA news agency quoted Ali Asghar Soltanieh as saying. "After the tests are conducted, (the fuel) will be placed in the core of the reactor once again."

Just because a senior government official said it does not make it true. They have been lying to us all along.

Great News!

Maybe Zer0 will bomb the plant in the next 12 hours because he now knows that the bombing will not release radioactive gasses.

Oh! Wait a minute. I said Obama; I meant someone with a spine, like Isreal!

That picture..that's it?

The original commercial nuke reactor at the Westinghouse Turtle Creek PA was WAY more impressive!

And that's with that thing in the background? Cooling tower? Prayer tower?

What a mickey mouse operation! It generates way more low level waste than high level waste.

If the MSM is printing ink its a lie.

The fuel is being unloaded from Iran's “peaceful” reactor because there is no “peaceful” nuclear program and they now own the Russian supplied nuclear fuel rods needed for their other reactors to produce weapons grade fuel.

There it is.

Only the MSM would be brazen enough to present this lie as a wonderful thing.

No need to bomb the facility. It will take years to go through that place piece by piece to find out the extent of the Stuxnet damage.

Next up, sabotage the fuel rods that will go back into the reactoras well as have someone friendly on the team doing the inspections.

Might as well level the place, but easier to put a hex on it so people will refuse to work there.

On one hand it may be a smokescreen. If the reactor is really being used to produce Pu-239 (very good bomb material), they don’t want to leave it in the reactor too long, else the percentage of Pu-240 goes up to unsuitable levels.
One the other hand
Leaking fuel elements?
Instability due to too much fuel in one space? This would be a serious miscalculation of reactor geometry.
Operators not knowing what they are working with?

I would suspect that is an off gas stack.

miscalculation of reactor geometry

Interesting. The ruskies would not make that error. More likely an improper fuel load. Perhaps an inadvertent criticality? New fuel in a pool?

the russians have been dragging their feet, but I read in some post that they are worried at the Iranian's hurry in getting the reactor on line...the Russians thought it could be another Chernobyl if they didn't take it slowly.

Hmmm. Would not have thought that virus could have gotten so far. Thanks for the input. I guess the ruskies know what a respecter of prestige reactivity is. It takes a certain mindset and moral code to handle nuclear energy. I don't believe Iran has it. Sadly we are loosing it.
