Men who take non- steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs three times a day for more than three months are 2.4 times more likely to have erectile dysfunction compared to men who do not take those drugs regularly, according to a Kaiser Permanente study published online in The Journal of Urology. While previous research showed a trend toward this same finding, this observational study used electronic health records, an automated pharmacy database and self- reported questionnaire data to examine NSAID use and ED in an ethnically diverse population of 80,966 men aged 45 to 69 years throughout California. 80,966 men aged 45 to 69 years throughout California After controlling for age, race ethnicity, smoking status, diabetes hypertension, heart disease, high cholesterol and body mass index the researchers found that ED was 1.4 times more likely -- a modest risk -- among regular NSAID users compared to men who did not take the drugs regularly. Considering all the warnings they rattle off on the TV for many drugs (hair falling out, teeth turning green, dizzyness, death, coma, etc.) I guess a little ED ain’t so horrible.

That headline got my attention!!

My doc just put me on a “non-steriodal” anti-inflammatory medicine. He took me off another medication because this new one was non-steriodal..?? Luckily I take it in small doses and for short periods of time ( as conditions dictate , which is only a few times a year ). The new medication sucks though. It takes a week to work whereas my previous med only took a few days to work.

People have totally unrealistic expectations of medications. They think that they should be able to swallow a tablet or capsule and it will be a "magic bullet" targeting (sorry for the violent rhetoric) only the intended system and having no other effects in the body. Pharmacotherapy is a trade-off. You are essentially trading one set of circumstances for another and hoping you make a good trade.

People who have to take opiates for pain would be happy if the the mu opioid receptors only existed in the brain, but they also exist in the bowel. Therefore opiate use = constipation.

On a separate note, years ago Ciba Geigy marketed a combination NSAID (phenylbutazone plus a steroid) under the trade name Butazolidin S. I am showing my age here :)

Some of the most idiotic decisions I've made in my life have been precluded by erectile hyper-function.
