In a desert tent outside Colonel Gaddafi's home town of Sirte four years ago, Tony Blair shook hands with the Libyan dictator in a controversial 'blood money' deal which laid the foundations for the release of the Lockerbie bomber.
Also inside the tent was Peter Sutherland, then chairman of BP, who subsequently announced a £545million oil deal.
It was the moment when Gaddafi came in from the cold - and when the distinguished name of the London School of Economics was dragged firmly into the murky world of corporate politics.
For we now know that Mr Sutherland was peddling the interests of that institution as much as the oil company he headed.
As well chairing BP, he was about to become chairman of the LSE's court of governors, party to all key decisions.
So not only was he backing a shameless Blairite rehabilitation programme for a brutal despot and touting for business for BP, he also had the begging bowl out on behalf of the LSE.
The conflicts of interest are dizzying.
It was Mr Sutherland, a former Irish politician and chairman of Goldman Sachs International, who on Thursday night as chairman of the court of governors, accepted with 'great regret and reluctance' the resignation of Sir Howard Davies.
