TRENTON The former longtime Middlesex County Sheriff Joseph Spicuzzo was arrested Monday morning and accused of selling jobs to young recruits and taking bribes of at least $50,000.
Spicuzzo, 65, the chairman of the Middlesex County Democratic party, turned himself in Monday and was charged with official misconduct and bribery. He faces a mandatory minimum of five years and up to 10 years for each charge, the attorney generals office said.
Spicuzzo served as sheriff for three decades, announcing in 2010 he would not run again for health reasons. He is accused of demanding bribes of up to $25,000 to hire new investigators in the sheriffs department between 2007 and 2008.
Official misconduct does not get much more audacious and venal than this, said Stephen Taylor, criminal justice director of the attorney generals office, said in a statement.
Top state Democrats from Middlesex County called for his resignation, including Assemblyman John Wisniewski, chairman of the state Democratic Party.

Spicuzzo was nominated to his position on the board of the New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority in December 2009 by a lame duck Gov. Jon Corzine, a Democrat, angering then-Gov.-elect Chris Christie. The incoming Republican governor called Spicuzzo probably the singular most unqualified candidate for the Sports Authority you could find. The authority runs the Meadowlands and the racetracks.

thanks for the post. Corzine sounds like he was more corrupt than people truly knew. How much more corruption will come out in the news from New Jersey?

There are no Democrats who are not corrupt - there are only corrupt Democrats who have not been caught, yet.

That is funny and would be earth shattering, stop the presses news if a NJ RAT was found to not be corrupt.

He had been the county’s SHERIFF twice as long (30 years) as he’d been Democrat party official.
