The moderate republicans (Snowe, Brown, etc.) voted for the bill. The 3 republican no votes were Rand Paul, Jim Demint, and Mike Lee. Their opposition was from the right, that the bill still spends too much money, and it does.
Thanks for the info. The DeMint, Lee and Paul votes are a surprise, no matter what their rationale is.
Aha... Methinks there is a deeper game running here. Up until now, Reid was saying that there would have to be compromise to get the Senate to pass anything, and that he was sure the 'Republican proposal' would fail to pass. Now the most conservative Senators took what might have been a slam-dunk win and made sure it would fail. I have trouble thinking that they did this out of love for Reid or pigheadedness. Is the pressure for even deeper cuts building? Is the calculus that a shutdown will not be an embarrassment to the Pubbies this time? Are the Senate Dems being herded into stampeding like Cheeseheads?
Argh! There is either some brilliance about to reveal itself as the Dems implode, or we really are the Stupid Party. Hope rises yet again in this tired old heart.
