CHESTERFIELD, S.C. - 38-year-old Pageland resident Frankie Bowers was assigned to the Chesterfield County Animal Shelter in January to work off $1,000 in back child support. Bowers says he witnessed the shootings of about 40 dogs and at least 15 cats. The county adopted a lethal injection policy about a year ago.

This is really gruesome stuff. SLED (South Carolina Law Enforcement) has been investigating for days. No arrests to date. Sheriff backpedaling.

This is like the Chinese government's slave labor.

That’s #ing cruel.
I’m 50/50 on cats - some are awesome, some are just a pain in the ass, but I still respect their lives paying the vet, food, and whatever other bills that accompany their purfectly arrogant existences.

May the same brutality be visited upon this utterly worthless piece of human garbage. I know God does make mistakes creating people...but with this piece of filth, He came REALLY close.

But why waste lethal injection drugs on cats? They are not human.
Shooting can be very "humane". One through the brain and it's all over.
I suppose I will be called insensitive for that. But it's how my grandfather killed his pigs and cows. A .22 through the eye. He never missed.

Someone will definitely be in trouble. Only cops are allowed to shoot dogs.

Wait just a minute: "assigned to work... To pay off back child support?". So let's get this straight: you have money troubles. The bitch probably drove you to drink. Then the state garnishes your wages. You can't pay rent and get kicked out; they repossess your car. Your boss lets you go because the state pulled your license for owing child support. You certainly can't afford a lawyer, even if there was one who would stand up to the Big Nanny. Then the state "assigns" you work, makes you it's slave?
Sorry about the cats, but this sounds like extenuating circumstances.

All the pet owners that allow this out of control breeding and the resulting cost to their fellow citizens should be rounded up and made to do this work and then spend ten year's cleaning the bathrooms at the county jail.
People that don't own cats and dog don't cause this problem.
To: Shannon
Shooting is no crueler than injecting.

Yes he did miss, between the eyes and 2 inches up, direct brain shot.

Aside from using a pipe to bludgeon the cats, no excuse for that, there is nothing wrong with shooting a diseased animal. I’m pretty sure farmers don’t keep a cabinet stocked with syringes and poison.
I think this guy spoke up b/c he was worried about other prisoners assigned to work duty there and the chance that they could get caught with a gun, wouldn’t go well for them. The author put the inhumane treatment of animals spin on it.

Animals can be shot humanely, as your grandfather did, and they can be shot inhumanely.
People who club animals BEFORE shooting them are not interested in giving them humane deaths.
The fact that one of the dogs was found *still alive* highlights the fact that the workers were not giving them humane deaths.

Dead is dead.
You do realize that cows are killed for you to have that McDonald's hamburger, don't you?
Ever been to a slaughterhouse?
But go ahead and believe you're holy because you just pay other people to kill stuff for you.

The problem is not the presence of the animals in the shelter.
The problem is the lack of regard these people had for proper termination procedures.
Those who view animals as creations of God tend to dispatch them as humanely as possible, believing that they will be held accountable before God otherwise.
Those who view animals as being below us in the evolutionary chain have fewer compunctions engaging in animal cruelty.
