Obama: No sense in defunding public broadcasting
The Hill ^ | 3-11-11 | Michael O'Brien

President Obama defended public broadcasting from cuts on Friday, emphasizing that defunding networks like NPR and PBS would do little to rein in spending.

As Republicans in Congress hope to defund government assistance to the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, which in turn supports NPR and PBS stations, Obama said the cuts make little sense.

"I think it's going to be important for us to have a conversation after we get the short-term budget done, about how do we really tackle the problem in a comprehensive way," Obama said at a press conference on Friday.

"And that means not just going after Head Start or Corporation for Public Broadcasting. That's not where the money is," he added.

Republicans included in their continuing resolution to fund government the rest of this year provisions that would severely cut support for public broadcasting. Calls to defund those networks have only intensified after a conservative activist's video emerged this week showing a former NPR executive referring to the Tea Party movement in harsh terms.

Democrats, in turn, have accused Republicans of trying to defund "Sesame Street," the popular children's program on PBS.

Obama, commenting earlier in his press conference on the spending fight in Congress, urged lawmakers to steer clear of including political statements — like defunding CPB — as part of their measure to fund government the rest of this fiscal year.

Let PBS be financed through private and charitable contributions from the private sector. This is how it should be done. The same with NPR, ACORN and Planned Parenthood.

Reining-in spending would do nothing to rein-in spending?

Did I hear that right?

Did you ever notice that proposed cuts for ANYTHING are never where the real problem is? With the possible exception of military spending, that is.

How about defunding it just because funding it just so wrong. Same applies to the rest of Bammy and the Rat’s favorite programs.

President Obama defended public broadcasting from cuts on Friday, emphasizing that defunding networks like NPR and PBS would do little to rein in spending.

This their argument against any spending cuts: "It's too little to do any good." Any single cut is tiny, but a lot of tiny cuts add up. Besides, why is spending always "too little" to matter; yet, a cut in the budget, even if it is the same amount, is described as devastating.

Well, no sense in funding it then either.

Reciprocal nihilism.

Having the criminal’s mind that he does, 0 has already appropriated that money for his own purposes.

Every pet ‘Rat project from now on is going to result in this same political tug of war. The pubbies need to hold their ground and start buying TV time in order to explain the importance of cuts to a public which is bombarded by LSM propaganda constantly.

That will cost big money but isn’t fundraising Priebus’ claim to fame?

I made myself listen to NPR everyday driving home from work during 2008-2009. I wanted to get a sense of the liberal mood in the country. They “covered” the presidential campaign and there were were a lot of political stories. NPR (and PBS) were so biased in tone, in content, in omission, in lack-of balance, in guests they interviewew, in every way; it was unbelievable. The gushing over Obama was truely sickening. The voice pitch changes in talking about Obama and then McCain was hilarious. Only a limpy leftist could listen and think they weren’t biased up to their slimy gills. My torture is over and I don’t listen to (or yell at) NPR anymore.

>>emphasizing that defunding networks like NPR and PBS would do little to rein in spending<<

A billion here, a billion there, and soon you’re talking real money.

When I sold fuller brush back in the early 70’s, I noticed it was MUCH easier to sell to poor people than middle class or upper class. The reason: The difference between rich people and poor people is that rich people know that you spend your money a dollar at a time.

A lot of our federal spending cuts are going to be small, but like the family that cuts small things - club memberships, extra cable channels, etc. you can save sizeable money every month. We did.

Urkel always talks about “we wont rest until...” so maybe he can do the hard work of cutting programs, fifty million at a time, until we have cut some REAL money. He will also have significantly downsized the entitlement mentality by so many groups.

But he won’t. He’s Urkel.

It is blatently obvious to anyone with a half an ounce of brains that this poor fool, Obama is clearly out of his depth and doesn't have the foggiest idea of what's going in the world, in this country, in his own back yard. Thanks God we will be rid of him in less than two years!! Amen!!
