The attack on personal liberties continues....
An increase of the cigarette tax of $1 would generate an estimated additional $272.5 million in new revenue in the first year.
Not to mention the failure of logic. They mention tax increases as a way to increase revenue AND a method to get people to stop buying the product they're taxing. Great. Which is it? It's one or the other. If people stop smoking, they're not paying RJR (or whomever) or this wonderful additional sales tax. So is the $272.5 million estimated off of current smoker levels? If it is, don't throw out that garbage of "We're doing it to make people quit."

Once they institute a tax and then revenue from the source starts to decline they look for other ways to tax to make up for the ‘lost revenue’. The Govt. beast is never satisfied.

Smokers across Rowan County are fired up about the possibility of the cost of a pack of cigarettes increasing by $1
They always try to frame it as if smokers are the only ones upset by these tax hikes. That the rest of us non smokers are on some high horse somewhere unaffected by these impositions.

Facts on smoking and the tax as ... The best way to prevent and reduce tobacco use... "The best way" means a value judgment, not a fact.
An increase of the cigarette tax of $1 would generate an estimated additional $272.5 million in new revenue in the first year.
Pulled that out of their nether regions. Some states saw a loss in tax revenue after increasing cigarette taxes.

The state house here in NC is controlled by the GOP 62-57. very much doubt that North Carolina House Bill 341 will be passed.

If I were in charge of a tobacco company what I would do is pick a locale (State, county, city) run by these taxaholics and tell them, “You’re right- and to help you out we will no longer sell our product in your area.” Hopefully the other tobacco companies would join in as well.
Then I would sit back and watch the fun.

Ill cut it up as I need it, and roll it up as I need it. That way I can throw my middle finger up at the government. Earn as little as necessary. Spend as little as possible. Starve the beast.
