It saddens me to think that we were once capable of doing such great feats of building.

True, now highway improvement projects can take years. Near San Antonio, we've watched the same stretches of highways under "improvement" take over 20 years. We've gotten so used to it that we now look at miles of orange cones and concrete barricades as part of the "improvements".

The tollway authority is building a “high-five”interchange between the North Dallas Tollway and the Sam Rayburn Tollway. It is talking about half the time that it took the highway department to construct a similar interchange between 635 and 75. The difference is that the tollway authority is rolling in dough. Half the gas tax goes to finance the public schools, as the Texas highway department seldom has enough money to go around.
