New York electric bills to soar 12%
NY Post ^ | April 1, 2011 | BILL SANDERSON

New Yorkers are about to get zapped on their electric bills.

Starting May 28, households in the five boroughs will be socked with rate increases of up to 12 percent to run appli ances -- after the feds de cided that power companies needed an extra $500 million a year, The Post has learned.

And that's on top of another 4 percent state-OK'd Con Ed rate hike that kicks in today.

A typical apartment resident's electric bill of $74 -- based on 250 kilowatt hours of power each month -- will go up to $86, or $12 more than last July.

About $8 of that boost will come from the feds' decision.

Businesses will be hit even harder. A small firm that paid $406 last July will shell out $477 this July -- a 17.5 percent boost.

About $59 of that comes courtesy of the feds.

Mayor Bloomberg and Sen. Charles Schumer are furious over the shocking ruling -- and are urging the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission to reconsider.

"The economic impact of this order on the residents and businesses of New York City would be severe," Bloomberg complained to the commission.

He said the "excessive increases" to power bills resulting from FERC's decision will cause "severe hardship."

Schumer told The Post: "New Yorkers shouldn't be forced to pay exorbitant electric rates because some faraway regulator decided not to look at all the evidence."

City officials say the feds granted the increase on the incorrect belief that power companies...

--snip--

In effect, the feds are letting generating companies get reimbursed "for costs they are not even paying," said Con Ed official Richard Miller said.

His company will take the blame from consumers but not make an extra penny, he said. That's because it doesn't generate power; it only transmits it...

Consolidated Edison. Mom used to work for one of Halliburton’s divisons that took care of the nuclear power plants and Indian Point was one of the contracts. I graduated June 7th in 1985 from high school and I was working at the same division for Halliburton the following Monday for a summer job.

That’s OK. Food and energy aren’t counted when they calculate inflation, so this won’t impact Obama’s economic numbers.

Consolidated Edision (ticker “ED”). A great dividend-paying stock.

The Obama administration giving more favors to their crony rich donors.

It tickles me that these idiots get hit first.

I disturbs me that the rest of us will suffer and that the libtards will deflect blame.

I wish my electric bill was $86 per month. Of course I don't live in a 250 sq. ft. apartment either.

Wait until their cap and trade kicks in.

And how about those rates - here in Texas we buy electricity by the 1000s of kWh’s, particularly in summer. Those clowns are looking 35 cents per kWh, about 3 times what we pay here.

We won’t be paying those rates until they finish shutting down the coal plants here.

..........to say nothing of the fact that the State of New York went over-whelmingly for Obama in 2010..............

in Austin, a large part of the monthly electric bill has nothing to do with producing power................it is purely and simply redistribution!.............City Council, all Van Jones types, approves the rates because the City owns the utility..................

in short, it’s nothing but a tax and I suspect this is what is going on here.............the commies are simply grabbing some more money from the people of New York who voted for Obama to grow government..............Schumer and Bloomberg are just feigning objection as they’ve never seen a tax they didn’t support..............

Well, we sure as heck better POINT THAT OUT. Because if we don’t, the people will simply blame greed from the utilities, which they’re inclined to do anyway.

If we fail at that, we don’t deserve to be in power, AT ALL.

Holy smokes! That's nearly 30 cents a kilowatt hour going up to to about 35 cents. My bill is about 12 cents per kwh including the taxes.

But the Zero said electric bills will necessarily skyrocket.

Same here. Mine is near $180 a month. I can't imagine 250 sq feet, that's like a little cabin around here.
