Chocolate milk stirs controversy in schools
The Washington Post ^ | April 11, 2011 | Kevin Sieff

It was once a staple of public school cafeterias that blended the indulgent and the nutritious, satisfying parents and children both. But chocolate milk is uncontroversial no more. Dozens of districts have demanded reformulations. Others have banned it outright.

At the center of these battles are complex public health calculations: Is it better to remove sugary chocolate flavorings at the risk that many students will skip milk altogether, missing out on crucial calcium and Vitamin D? Or should schools instead make tweaks — less fat, different sweeteners, fewer calories — that might salvage the benefits while while minimizing the downside?

However schools answer these questions, protest inevitably follows. When Fairfax County and D.C. schools banned chocolate milk last year from elementary lunch lines, officials heard not just from parents and students. They also received letters and petitions from a slew of nutritionists and influential special interest groups.

Most accused the districts of acting rashly, robbing students of a tasty drink and the vitamins and minerals that fuel bone and muscle growth.

“We got 10 to 20 e-mails a day,” said Penny McConnell, director of food and nutrition services for Fairfax. “It was a lot of pressure.”

This month — and partly because of that pressure — Fairfax officials announced that they would reintroduce chocolate milk in school cafeterias. The newer, low-fat version includes sucrose, which is made from sugar cane or beets, instead of high-fructose corn syrup, which some critics say is more heavily processed and, as a result, less healthy.

Such reformulations have satisfied some of chocolate milk’s critics. But most scientists and nutritionists, including those employed by local school districts, say that changing sweeteners makes little dietary difference if the total calorie content stays the same.

You should step up to heavy whipping cream and cocoa powder.

Chocolate is a vegetable, chocolate milk is a vegetable juice. Case closed. I need to go check on my stash of chocolate.

I am glad I am all grown up now. I would not have survived high school without my chocolate milk and donut lunch each day.

Sometimes I wonder how I ever made it through childhood. I guess it’s by the grace of God that I dodged the dreaded chocolate milk bullet.

I have tried heavy whipping cream, the fat content is the same as H&H but I didn't care much for it. Maybe adding the cocoa would help.

I make ice cream for the g/kids in the summer time and although the recipe calls for milk, whipping cream and H&H, I do not use milk at all, substitute more H&H instead.

My house is pretty popular in the summer time.

Half & Half -- the good stuff!!

It is addictive!

Down side - A half gallon costs about the same as a gallon of regular milk.

Yes~! WE MUST SAVE THE CHILDREN from the horrors of .. CHOCOLATE MILK

There must be a deferal program to oversee the chocolate milk levels

and the salary for the 2500 employees should be at least 86K each

That will protect THE CHILDREN

I grew up drinking Chocolate Milk, Hersheys Syrup and Extra Rich Milk. That's the only way made it, unless we decided to have an Egg Cream.

My Dad was a Soda Jerk when he was a teenager. He bought one of the Hamilton Beach Malt Machines from his boss over 70 years ago, and we own it now and it still works like a charm. We had Chocolate Malts at least three times a week as far back as I remember.

My Dad just turned 88 and my Mother lived to be 80.

This Nanny State garbage just gets worse and worse. I have to wonder how I made it this far. I spent my youth riding in Cars with no seat belts or airbags. I rode my Schwinn Stingray everywhere and never had a Bike Helmet. I played with Mercury that was in the Chemistry Kit my Parents bought me. Both Paint and Gasoline contained Lead, but nobody had to tell me not to eat or drink them.

This country is full of helpless whiners. No wonder we elected an idiot like Obama who never did a hard days work in his life. What a shame.

Someone will have to show me where Republicans do these sort of things.

Notice how it is only Democrats that tell us what to eat, what to drink, what to wear, what to drive.

Roger that. I remember playing with liquid mercury several times all through school. I’m sure the chemistry set I had when I was ten is now illegal.

[sigh]
