RIP

I wonder if Jane Harman will either sell Newsweek, or will assume his role.

I wonder if Jane Harman will either sell Newsweek...

Sidney bought it for a buck. She'll be lucky to find someone she can pay to take it off her hands.

No, he bought it from Washington Post Company for $1.

Then, a few months ago, he merged Newsweek with DailyBeast, where he then assumed the role of Executive Chairmen. Tina Brown acts as CEO, and I believe is a minority shareholder, although it's a substantial minority.

Also, I see Jonathan Alter has found a new home at DailyBeast. He was let go by Newsweek just this weekend. Weird.

I guess buying Newsweak was the last straw — sorry, couldn’t resist.

Since you shouldn’t say anything bad about the dead - I won’t say anything.

“I wonder if Jane Harman will either sell Newsweek, or will assume his role. “

Is she still in Congress? If she is, a liberal owning a liberal magazine presents a bit of a conflict of interest.

Wouldn’t you say?

No, with some controversy, she resigned her seat just weeks after the new session started in January. She’s currently the head of the Woodrow Wilson Center.

I'd never heard of the Wilson Center til your post.

It's funded in part by Soros.

"It's funded in part by Soros."

I wouldn't read too much into that. It's not that kind of institution. Rich people of all political stripes give it cash. It's actually a part of the Smithsonian. It's Trustees come from both parties, and they're appointed by the President to time-specific terms.

Not to quibble, but I’ve never seen Soros fund anything antithetical to his goals.

I'm sure Soros gives to (literally) thousands of other charities that you have never heard of, either - almost all of whom have no political agenda whatsoever. He's worth $20B. His charitable giving statement probably resembles a phone book - the same could be said of dozens of super-wealthy Republicans, many of whom I'm sure are also Wilson Center donors.

The funny thing about your statement is that for the last decade or more, the Wilson Center has come under fire from fringe leftists groups for fanning the flames of global war. And what do they base this on? Almost every year, the largest single corporate donor is BAE Systems. BAE, of course, is about as far removed from George Soros as you can get.

The old order changeth yielding place to the new......

The new order is obscured and un clear. Perhaps the old order actually died and there is no new order here.

This will be interesting. Newsbeast - or whatever it is - cannot run without significant cash subsidy. Now that Harmon is dead, I suppose his wife the congresscritter owns it.

Reckon she will continue to pour money into it?
