Cool, wet weather halts Midwest corn planting

CHICAGO (Reuters) – The U.S. Midwest will be cool and wet for at least the next 10 days, preventing farmers from planting corn through most of April, a forecaster said on Tuesday.

Up to an inch of rain fell in northern Iowa, eastern Nebraska and southeastern South Dakota since early Monday while the eastern Corn Belt received 0.25 to 0.75 inch of rain.

"The Midwest is not going to do well under this type of weather," said forecaster Joel Burgio with Telvent DTN weather service.

Farmers will be sidelined, waiting for soils to dry and warm up before they can resume planting corn and spring wheat.

All the rain is also raising Midwest river levels, forcing the closure of several locks on the upper Mississippi River, the main artery to transport Midwest grain to export terminals at the U.S. Gulf.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture said late Monday that 7 percent of the corn crop was seeded as Sunday, versus the 8 percent average for mid-April.

Effects of any disturbances in plant and grow cycles could be devastating to the economy as more and more ethanol is produced for non-food use.. not to mention the price of corn tortillas.

Good thing we're not using this stuff for fuel! Or else we'd REALLY be screwed!

Oh wait...

There are scientists who see us entering a cooling phase. It would be fitting for a global cooling to happen while the warming freaks continue to scream. God does have a sense of humor.

However... a cooling would make global warming look like a party. Global cooling means less food, and ultimately more starvation in the world.

I just flew back from eastern South Dakota Sunday. The flooding there is spectacular. Nobody’s losing their homes, but their fields have been shrinking into small and large two foot deep lakes for the last 13 years. It’s wet.

Oh, and we had about 8 inches of snow on Friday.

Seems we’ve read a lot this year about a variety of difficulties with cornholers.

The problem is easily solved by increasing the ethanol subsidy.

Once again, the clueless thinking what farmers grow should be subject to their own wants and desires. Farmers have the right to sell their products for whatever purpose they so choose. Do you have any idea how much of corn, soybeans, and wheat go into “non-food” uses? Read up and get a clue. Obesity remains the #1 health issue in the US so it ain’t like people and pigs aren’t getting their fair share.

Here is a list of a few other commodities up in price % over the last year—all from non-food uses:
Silver up 146%
Cotton up 139%
Coffee up 125%
Oats up 116%
Wheat up 89%
Heating oil up 47%
Soybeans up 38%
Sugar up 35%
Crude up 32%

Chill out. There’s another 5 or so weeks before there will be any real effect on yields.

If a poor corn harvest in the corn belt drives up the price of corn, won’t the cost of ethanol also go up? Right now ethanol blended gasoline is popular largely because government subsidies and tax breaks make it 10-25 cents cheaper per gallon than regular gasoline. If the increase in ethanol prices raised the price of these blends to par with regular gasoline or even higher who would buy the stuff especially if the blends give considerably lower miles per gallon? Unless Congress is willing to up the subsidies this could be a possible end for the ethanol boondoggle.

Please get with the program. It is still climate change. You need some re-education.

I don’t know of any commodity that declined. You can find these lists on most any business site that has commodities listings. Hyperinflation is coming with a vengance and will result in the redistribution of US wealth to many other countries. This is BO’s grand plan to bring us to our knees.

I wouldn’t get concerned unless planting is delayed by more than a month from here.
