Deferments Helped Trump Dodge Vietnam
The Smoking Gun ^ | April 28, 2011

APRIL 28--Despite Donald Trump’s claim this week that he avoided serving in the Vietnam War solely due to a high draft number, Selective Service records show that the purported presidential aspirant actually received a series of student deferments while in college and then topped those off with a medical deferment after graduation that helped spare him from fighting for his country, The Smoking Gun has learned.

During a TV interview Tuesday morning, Trump--who spent his high school years enrolled at the New York Military Academy--said, “I actually got lucky because I had a very high draft number. I’ll never forget, that was an amazing period of time in my life.”

He went on to recall, “I was going to the Wharton School of Finance, and I was watching as they did the draft numbers and I got a very, very high number and those numbers never got up to.” The word “deferment” was not mentioned by Trump during his chat with the morning show hosts on WNYW, the Fox affiliate in New York City.

Well, he is supposed to be a good friend of Bill Clinton, and I doubt Trump is a "real" Republican, much less than a conservative, but here the MSM are sure treating him like one.

Frankly, I don’t care about whether or not he got a deferment as long as it was legal.

Deferments helped a LOT of people dodge Vietnam.

I wonder if the author of this piece was in Vietnam.

Probably the closest s/he ever got was a G.I. Joe doll for Christmas.

Deferments were put in place for a reason, and if a person legally qualifies for one, then more power to him/her.

Also, salute and honor those who did go and risk or lose their lives.

Most of the 80's babies reporters now have to go and look up the word "deferment" to see what it means, and then have the audacity to try and shame those who lived in a different time, a different America.

Trump has fallen from grace.

He dared to question the annointed one.

Obama’s media rumpswabs will get their revenge.

Trump is a charlatan.

Indeed. I think maybe his vulgarity and obscenities just caught on tape might finally be jarring people into realizing Donald is simply not even remotely Presidential material. Not only is he not a conservative, but you can't be yelling MF this and MF that and be taken seriously. Trump is a complete clown.

Trump is nothing more than a conversation piece. His speech in Las Vegas ended any semblance of being a real candidate.

Did his daddy send him to France to do ‘missionary work” for the Mormon Church like Mitt Romney?

Which putative Presidential candidate served with our military in Viet Nam?

Palin, Bachmann, Rubio, Nader, Paul, West, Romney, Obama, Jindal.

Oh, the language? A total turn-off, unprofessional IMO as well, but you know what? I think it will actually net him votes, considering how debased this culture is now.

Check this thread out: Rush and an old frined of his are at odds over Trump. Interesting read. Link

Also Judson Phillips of Tea Party Nation in an email today, about Trump's colorful public language:

"At the end of the day, despite what Trump, the master marketer is trying to sell us, he is not a conservative and he is not the one we want to be President".

That is not the issue.

Its about integrity, or rather Trump’s obvious lack of it.

Exactly. Only a liberal could suggest sending someone with a physical deficiency into combat. And if getting a college deferment is a crime, half my commanding officers would have to do jail time. You took a deferment only while you were in school. When you were finished, you were drafted or got a commission like anyone else.

I'm as suspicious of Trump's motives as anyone, but this is the last thing anybody should be attacking him for.

These people are so good at seeking out Trump’s secrets. Why is it none of them can find out anything about Obama.

Don’t bother to answer, It’s because they are too busy kissing his azz.

Good stuff, thanks for the link and quote from Phillips.

Trump is not likely to run and would never win the GOP nomination anyway. Conservative primary voters will quickly realize that Donald isn’t a conservative and that would end things pretty quick. The one danger with Trump is that he might try to keep himself relevant on the political scene by going 3rd party. Of course he wouldn’t win be doing that either, but a vanity campaign might siphon off some of the anti-Hussein vote. Always remember, even here on FR there are actually a lot of people who will toss their vote in the crapper by voting 3rd party.

I'm sure if FR was around in 1992, we'd see a huge groundswell of support for Perot.
