WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Osama bin Laden lived for the past five to six years in the compound deep inside Pakistan where the al Qaeda leader was killed by U.S. forces, President Barack Obama's counterterrorism adviser said on Tuesday.
Bin Laden, who was living in Afghanistan before a 2001 U.S.-led invasion helped topple its Taliban regime, was holed up in a compound in the military garrison town of Abbottabad in Pakistan before Sunday's operation to kill him.
"Well I think the latest information is that he was in this compound for the past five or six years and he had virtually no interaction with others outside that compound. But yet he seemed to be very active inside the compound," White House counterterrorism chief John Brennan said on the CBS Early Show program.
"And we know that he had released videos and audios. We know that he was in contact with some senior al Qaeda officials," Brennan added.
"So what we're trying to do now is to understand what he has been involved in over the past several years, exploit whatever information we were able to get at the compound and take that information and continue our efforts to destroy al Qaeda," Brennan added.
The fact that the al Qaeda chief had lived in the compound for such a long time has prompted some U.S. lawmakers to demand a review of the billions of dollars in aid the United States provides Pakistan, which is fighting a Taliban insurgency.

I'll accept my insanity, or Goebbels would be proud.
No, we should give Pakistan more billions of dollars because of the help that they supplied to us./s Recall that they kept bin laden in a compound for 5 years so the US could make up its mind to strike.
Not one more dime in aid for our enemies in the Pah-kee-stahn government. If they are really so stupid that they didn’t know OBL was camped out in huge digs near their version of West Point, across from a police station, then they are too stupid to be of any use as an ally.
More lyin' than "splainin'."
either that or just cut 3B from the budget entirely.
No, he didn't. There's not a single verifiable communication from him after 2005. There's been a string of attempts - at first, videos which were quicly shot down, then audios which were found to be splices. For good treatment of this idiocy, see Neal Krawetz.
Not *one*, after Zawahri in August 2005 showed up in mourning garb talking about OBL in past tense.
Look, he was wearin' shades, you know? How was I supposed to know?
Me thinks there needs to be something checked out on how he could live there that long and our intelligence folks didn’t know it...or so we’re told. Doesn’t say much for our abilities in the world.
NO!!! Not another farthing!!!
As easy as it would seem to be able to find this guy, it was not. The guy didn't trust anyone except his couriers. They proved to be the ones that led us to him. I believe our intelligence folk was working fervently to get this guy and b/c of some info from KSM, we were able to get leads.
Also, we probably, misguidedly, trusted Pakistan. Hopefully we won't be making that mistake again.
CIA and DIA had to know.
A new audio tape from Osama bin Laden criticizes President Barack Obama for planting seeds of “hatred and vengeance toward Americans” and warns of “new long wars.”
The tape, aired on Arabic news network al Jazeera Wednesday, blasts the U.S. president for his role in Pakistan’s military operation against Taliban forces in the Swat Valley. The message came as Mr. Obama touched down in Saudi Arabia on the first leg of a Mideast trip to shore up diplomatic relations in the region.
U.S. intelligence officials confirmed the authenticity of tape but said “there’s no reason at this point to believe that any specific or credible threat is contained” in the message, reports CBS News White House correspondent Peter Maer.
“There has never been a fake bin Laden tape,” a U.S. counterterrorism official told CBS News. “In the past, he has timed the release of the messages to major events. So it’s unsurprising that he chose this particular week.”

The natural friend of democracy and freedom in that area is India. Pakistan is a terrorist state.
All US intel has ever verified in *any* obl tape is voiceprint data of separate words, which doesn’t mean a thing. Again, consult Neal Krawetz on the various acrobatics in the fakes. The US was never interested in verifying OBL’s death - until now, that is :).
The whole kill should have been held secret. This was a great opportunity to seize computer records etc from OBL’s residence and then run those leads to ground.
Instead, Obama and his administration blabbed to the public warning those targets that they were compromised. Obama used it to raise his low polling numbers and sacrificed much of the value of the intelligence gained.
Its treason committed for political points. They could have waited to announce it. But that would have been the responsible thing to do. Disgusting.
Not only should Aid to Pakistan be reviewed for termination but every Paki hired via an H-1B visa needs to be investigated.
Quite possibly we have allowed signifant support for our “enemy within” by giving them more fellow travelers with H-1B visas.
The whole deal was a political stunt.
Anyway, if no one else does, we may make available the tape of Zawahri declaring OBL in the past tense. It should be around here somewhere.
How can this incompetent goof code name Bin Laden after an American Indian Hero??? Politically Correct, Obama? Where, oh where is the LIBERAL OUTRAGE!?!?!?!?!?
Believing what comes out of 1600 now? When did this start?
