Electric vehicle charging stations coming to Springfield, Hadley, Pittsfield
The Republican ^

Posted on 05/03/2011 2:23:01 PM PDT by matt04

SPRINGFIELD — Western Massachusetts Electric Co. has announced plans to install three charging stations for plug-in electric cars as its parent company studies the future of rechargeable vehicles.

Charging equipment has been installed at the company's headquarters in Springfield and at the Courtyard Marriott Hotel in Hadley. A third location is planned for Pittsfield.

WMECO President Peter Clarks says the company wants to better understand consumer charging patterns and preferences. He says soaring gasoline prices and efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions make it clear the electric vehicles are a key component of the future of transportation.

And according to the most recent EIA figures MA get it's power from...

Nuclear.....5%

Coal........12%

Natural Gas.43%

Renewable...2%

Petroleum...23%

So, in theory, 97% of the juice used to charge that car will come from non-environmentally friendlily source of power. Or, 78% of sources producing carbon dioxide (exuding nuclear, renewable and hydro)

Way to go morons!

People still don’t get it that electricity has to be “produced”. And this is costing us double because it’s all subsidized via stealing the money from the producers via “standards”.

Or, you could say that 77% of the energy used in EVs won’t come from imported oil.

It’s my take that the electric vehicles were not intended to be charged at work or on the road.

They were intended to be charged at home. If that’s not good enough, then people should refrain from buying them.

This charging station idea is silly.

Let’s see... according to the industry, it takes on average 16 hours to recharge one of these duds. Just how are people going to get to and from the recharging stations while the cars are charging? Yes! Gasoline-powered taxis and public transportation! It’s a worth a trip out to the center of liberal lunacy just to walk around and talk to people, see the charging stations, talk to the college students, etc. Recommended: wear gloves.

I guess these places will have waiting lounges.. or are people supposed to sit in their cars for three hours while their go cart gets a charge..? Ridiculous.. simply ridiculous.

When I bought my hybrid, I did it with the specific goal of reducing our dependence on foreign oil.

It was the Mercury Mariner and I get 27 to 34 mpg.

That’s a hell of a lot better than our Mountaineer that gets about 12 to 18 mpg.

I haven’t seen any companies claiming it took more than eight hours to recharge their vehicles. Are you aware of a place that reveals they are misleading the public?

“WMECO President Peter Clarks soaring gasoline prices and efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions make it clear the electric vehicles are a key component of the future of transportation.”

Whatta moron. Investors in WMECO need to drag this idiot into the street, tar and feather him and run him out of town. These elitist, thieving, trough slopping pigs are really starting to irritate me.

I was wondering about the sudden rush across the country to provide charging stations when at last count way fewer than five thousand total electrics have been sold.

And then I remembered IBEW Local 3 work rules in NYC. I'm guessing the Labor czar has had talks about giving them IBEW jurisdiction at all charging stations across the country.

So while DoughtOne questions your take on charging time, the reality might more closely approach your number.

It's a perfect set-up for the IBEW in the major cities. Allows entry of illegals as "plug technicians", jourymen, foremen, and union reps man their posts.

Take a number we be wich you in a min-ed

You’re probably on the right track Covenantor. Pabianice, I’m not trying to flame you on that count either. You may be on to something I’m not.

Think about. It’s the biggest single opportunity that unions have ever had, especially with this administration.

Instant national membership mandated by Depts of Energy and Transportation, OSHA et al with the odd Executive Order thrown in.

Have to set up safety standards NOW! It’s for the children!

Full recharge time is going to be variable with voltage, phase, EV, hybrid, battery age, etc, but none of them take any where near as long as 16 hours.

As for these public charging stations, they are there for short charges. 10 to 15 minutes will get you down the road for 20 miles, until you get home and get the full charge.

I’m not putting your premise down. It is how this administration thinks.

Dude, you are onto something....

Just a wild @$$ guess on my part, but watch GE do Leasebacks of the 50,000 Volts they bought to all these NE Municipalities. I am very familiar with Spfld, less so Hadley and Pittsfield.

What a scam within a scam...

GE is Obama's doup, tax free, buys cars off the Obama Engrd GM, to keep the UAW happy and keep that illusion alive, the Pro Democratic Cities belly up to this "program" because they are Apperachiks, and the IBEW gets a "Taste"... Tony Soprano would be happy with this every one would get their palms greased...

Just so. Except I don’t think they’ve actual produced anywhere near 50 k Volts yet.

The UAW surely benefits but the IBEW I’m sure is flat-out drooling over the prospect of a mandated nation wide jurisdiction.

And just now I can’t see a way to stop it.

Petroleum...23%

I keep forgetting how much New England still depends on oil for heating and other stationary uses. I think the nationwide figure is in single digits.

So instead of fuelling their cars with gasoline, they will be using fuel oil. Brilliant. Must be Harvard grads.
