Boehner: US should not back away from Pakistan (Boehner for continued funding of Pakistan)

The Obama administration was investigating whether Pakistan knew Osama bin Laden was hiding deep inside the country as House Speaker John Boehner and top lawmakers insisted the U.S. maintain close ties with the sometimes reluctant ally in the war on terror.

The killing of Osama bin Laden at a compound just miles from Islamabad prompted furious questions about whether Pakistan was complicit in protecting the mastermind of the Sept. 11 attacks. Several Republicans and Democrats in Congress have raised the possibility of cutting off U.S. aid to Pakistan.

John Brennan, White House counterterrorism adviser, said the administration is "not accusing anybody at this point, but we want to make sure we get to the bottom of this." He said they were looking at whether bin Laden had a support system in Pakistan that allowed him to remain in the country. He made the comments in an interview with National Public Radio.

Amid the harsh criticism of Pakistan, Boehner and others said this was not the time to back away from Pakistan.

"I think we need more engagement, not less," he said. "Al-Qaida and other extremist groups have made Pakistan a target. ... Having a robust partnership with Pakistan is critical to breaking the back of al-Qaida and the rest of them."

Boehner, they threw our asses out of their country in 1969. They hate our guts. Cut that funding to them off tomorrow. This is B.S.

So is it really - Pakistan has nukes, so a propped up government that’s psuedo-loyal only to the US is better than a Militant Islamic Nuclear Pakistan?

Is that so hard to say?

Of course in international diplomacy you’re not afforded the luxury of stating the obvious. Flimsy lies are the required ticket to entry in this market.

Well I guess Bohener likes standing alone then. It’s amazing how fast these guys forget what we did to the Taliban for harboring OBL - and it looks like our “friends” in Pakistan were doing the same.

The Pakistani realize the US is at best an unreliable ally and more realistically is losing the WOT so they are trying to play both sides of the fence. The OBL thing is just the most current example of this.

In my experience countries throughout the middle east and the rest of the world are making the same calculation..

The US should tell the Indians that Pakistan is going to launch a nuclear attack on India at midnight.

All these stinking 'stans are rotten to the core. It's time for our pols to recognize the truth - we're at war with Islam - it is a war that started in the Seventh Century when Mohammed reached out his iron hand and subdued the Arabian Peninsula.

It has continued through the centuries with some periods of peace, but it continues nonetheless and the events of the last decade have merely been its latest manifestation.

They will not stop until the entire world is Dar al Islam. We must not stop until they are gone.

They have nukes. I think they believe we have to keep paying them to keep the whackjobs from using them.

If we were going to choose a friend/ally in the area, why wouldn’t we choose India?

Obama tripled aid to $3 billion a year. 90% of that is being stolen by Zardari and his cronies. They use terrorism as their ticket to rape the US taxpayer. They knew where OBL was but also knew if OBL is gone, the gravy train stops

You can have more than one ally. I am not sure they really consider Pakistan a great ally, but they have nukes and I think we pay them to keep them out of the wrong hands.

I am not sure about that, but it may be the case.

The problem is that we are already propping up a government with no guarantees that won’t give nuke technology to terrorist.

Cut them off and then if they start cleaning their backyards then we can reconsider.

Agree completely.

As to the nukes. We supposedly know where they. "Nice nukes ya got there Paki, shame something should happen to them."

Then again we have a feckless, lying, coward of a present. A guy can dream right?

The Paks have always played both sides of the fence, going back to the Non-Aligned Movement in the 1950's. They learned from experts in the USSR and the John Foster Dulles State Department.

The cold fact is, we have almost no overlapping interests with Pakistan. The only reason they collaborated with us in the first place is because we laid down the law after the anti-Taliban onslaught and when the world was taking George Bush by god seriously.

It is little noted that at the time, India and Pak were close to war. The US held some come-to-jesus meetings with both sides and that little side-show folded up and left town for the duration. We probably won't know just how or why, but the facts are what they are.
