The Los Angeles Unified School District board has agreed to replace at least half the teachers at a low-performing campus.

The board approved the plan unanimously Tuesday despite a rally by students who walked out of Huntington Park High School and marched about seven miles to the board meeting in downtown.

The students said the major shake-up would disrupt their education.

These students routinely disupt their own education by dropping out. Typical for latinos, HPHS has a 26 percent dropout rate.

Last year, only 5 percent of the school's students tested as proficient or better in math and 24 percent were proficient or better in English.

Bush's fault for requiring public schools to meet performance standards.

They will continue to be paid, however. </sarcasm, I hope>

They may not know how to read and write. But by golly they seem to be doing pretty good at community organizing and marching...just saying here!

despite a rally by students

No surprise, there. Everybody who has ever been to school knows students absolutely love the crappy teachers because it's easier to pull the wool over their eyes, and much easier to pass their classes, because they care less than the good educators.

These students are just protesting the end of their own sweet ride.

They are not getting an education now so what is there to disrupt?

They’ll probably just transfer the teachers around do some other poor-results schools. And the students are worried they might have to man-up and work, learn a little, be responsible.

Would this be for the 20 percent that show up to class every day? As for the rest, you can't disrupt something that is not there. These people have become nothing but societal parasites, and our tax dollars will feed them cuz day cain't fine no yob maing!!!!

walking the 7-8 miles is probably the most work they ever have done or ever will do for any reason other than to protest not getting their share of handouts.

Exactly. They are SINOs, Students In Name Only, the same ones who somehow --- via affirmative action and govt grants --- enter college and then demand citizenship via the "Dream Act." Education is meaningless to most of these kids, except for the freebies that come attached for them and their parents.

Sweet, huh?

Demanding works, if you are of a certain demographic.

I’m surprised they’re doing this in Los Angeles. Probably won’t ever happen in NYC, though.

The students said the major shake-up would disrupt their education.

What education?

Even the ones who manage to graduate these schools can barely read and couldn't balance a checkbook to save their lives.

The board approved the plan unanimously Tuesday despite a rally...

So the rally was Tuesday, also? When these kids give up their weekend to march in protest, maybe then I'll take them seriously. On a Tuesday, it's just a great way to get out of class.

And the new ones will be replaced too.

It ain’t the teachers...its the STUDENTS.

Does replace also include putting them elsewhere to teach?

Believe it when you see it.

They will just get re-hired at another district with glowing recommendations from the one that fired them.

School districts all over the country have a habit of putting the trash (bad teachers) out on the curb and sprinkling some perfume on it and then just waiting for someone else to pick it up.

Its a way to get rid of the problem teachers and not get any blow-back lawsuits for bad recommendations.

The move means about half of the school's teachers will be replaced, and all faculty and staff members will have to re-apply for their jobs.

Much more info here: LAUSD Approves Huntington Park HS Overhaul

The campus will also be broken into a series of "small-learning communities," including the existing Libra Academy, a small-school learning environment.
