‘Family Guy' actor's mom says show is corrupting today's youth, hopes to see program canceled
The Destin Log ^ | May 11, 2011 | Matt Algarin

As a member of the Parents Television Council (PTC), Barbara Warburton’s goal is to do whatever it takes to keep children from watching “corrupting” television programs such as Family Guy — even if it means butting heads with her son.

“The wrong messages are out there and that’s my main concern,” said Warburton, a Destin resident whose son Patrick voices the character Joe Swanson, a paralyzed cop, on the hit FOX TV show. “Shows like these are leading toward the destruction of morality… nothing seems sacred anymore.”

Through the PTC, Warburton and thousands of others with like-minded beliefs filed a formal complaint of indecency to the Federal Communications Commission last year to protest the program that commonly makes fun of Christianity, homosexuals and most other topics that might be deemed off limits.

Describing her son as a “compassionate, wonderful, caring and sincere” person, Warburton told The Log that she doesn’t approve of some of the roles that he has chosen over the years.

In addition to Family Guy, Patrick, who is a regular visitor to Destin, has also appeared in Seinfeld, The Tick, Rules of Engagement and Bee Movie, just to name a few. To read a couple of local profiles on the celebrity, click here.

And while she has never watched the animated Family Guy series, Warburton said she has read both show reviews and episode capsules from Family Guy, which is the No. 1 primetime half-hour comedy among teens and the No. 2 show on television amongst teens 12-17, according to the PTC.

“I have highly encouraged him to quit the show, but it hasn’t been very successful yet,” she said. “I have always adored people in this industry who turn down roles because of their convictions, but Patrick isn’t one of those people.”

“It’s a dichotomy that we have… where he wants to do shows and work with people that offend God,” she added. “I don’t want to offend God.”

When The Log asked the former actress what her son has to say about her aversion to the show, she said it was a business decision for him.

“He says it’s not his fault that parents let their kids watch the program,” Warburton said. “Many parents do keep an eye and supervise what their kids watch, but many parents don’t.”

Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane offered this statement, according to hollywoodreporter.com, when asked about the PTC’s complaint:

"Oh, yeah. That’s like getting hate mail from Hitler. They’re literally terrible human beings. I’ve read their newsletter, I’ve visited their website, and they’re just rotten to the core. For an organization that prides itself on Christian values — I mean, I’m an atheist, so what do I know? — they spend their entire day hating people..."

As for the roles Warburton said she would like to see her son take, a remake of “My Three Sons” tops her list, with Patrick playing the show’s father figure.

“He would be amazing in that type of a role,” she said. “He is such an amazing father and son; we have such a close family.”

And while Warburton said the family is very “tight-knit,” to this day, she still “prays” that her son will quit the show and that enough people will quit watching the show.

“If people who were Christians acted like Christians, they wouldn’t be watching that show anyway,” she said.

Society will always have the idea of a morality no matter how hard it turns against its earlier ideas of morality. To try to abandon “morality” as a whole is to abandon purpose as a whole.

What show isn’t??

GLEE is god-awful, should not be watched by impressionable kids. Then ABC is about to start showing “Good Christian Bi^%$s”, imagine if the title said “black” or “atheist” instead of Christian, would it have been made?

Patrick Warburton was also the one who spoke out against the show’s jabs at Sarah Palin and her son. He seems like a decent guy and is a great voice actor, loved him as Kronk.

Oh, this is too rich. Yes, Family Guy, of all things, is corrupting today’s youth. We also better shut down those jazz clubs, they’re encouraging disobedience of prohibition and use of that “marijuana” stuff.

Have you seen the episode where a naked Jesus comes on to Stewie, where Judas and Pilate sing about crucifying Jesus, Where God is trying to pick up women in a bar?

You only say that because Saudis control 175% of Fox and TV is controlling your mind and I haven’t watched TV in a year and I live in Iceland or Massachusetts or somewhere and Fox is controlled by the Saudis.

And while she has never watched the animated Family Guy series

Nothing like arguing from a position of ignorance.

Nope. While that is terribly sacreligous, and the show’s creators will answer for it, here’s a dirty little secret: Nothing you take in corrupts you. If your kids are corrupt, they’ve always been that way.

In 2006, Patrick filmed a TV ad endorsing California’s Proposition 85, the Parents’ Right to Know and Child Protection initiative.

“A California law currently allows someone other than a parent to take a child, a girl as young as 12 years of age, to go and get an abortion without the parents knowing anything about this. This means that your neighbor, a teacher, an older boyfriend, a sexual predator — can legally take your 12-year-old daughter to go and get an abortion, a secret confidential abortion.”

“That scares me. As a parent, I want to protect, to love, to guide my children. But the state has taken away this right and made it possible for sexual predators to harm our daughters and get away with their crimes with secret abortions behind parents’ backs.”

“That’s wrong. Parents have a right to know so they can protect their daughter. I can tell you, as a father who loves his daughter more than anything in the world, I will vote YES on 85 come Tuesday, November 7th. I hope you do too.”

I have never watched The View, but from the excerpts and transcripts I have read and/or seen I know what the show is all about.

This woman is absolutely delusional or trapped in the past. Either way, she's far removed from reality. My Three Sons would be dead last in the ratings for it's entire 5 week run before the network embarrassingly apologized and canceled the show.

Ouch. "Patrick isn't one of those people." That has to be a lovely thing to hear from your own mother. She really does seem like a lovely person. And, while I don't like Family Guy, which strikes me like it was written by a 10 year old with a head injury, I do think Patrick Warburton is one of the funniest guys alive. He has been hilarious in everything I have seen or heard him in. I particularly liked him as the wolf in Hoodwinked.
