Republican Craig Huey, an advertising executive, could make a surprise advance in California's Democratic-leaning 36th District special election, according to initial results in Tuesday's race to replace Democrat Jane Harman.
Due to the Los Angeles County district's Democratic lean, two Democrats were expected to top last night's "jungle primary," which featured 16 candidates of all parties running on a single ballot. But Huey narrowly edged out California Secretary of State Debra Bowen (D) by 206 votes for the second-place spot, according to preliminary results.
Staff for Bowen on Tuesday night noted that 9,811 votes remained to be counted. "We are confident Debra Bowen will be in the runoff," campaign manager Dan Chavez said in a statement. Bowen is the state's top elections official.

It is not who votes, it is whom counts the votes that is important.
Sure seems that way, doesn’t it.
Bowen is the Secretary of State of CA. The CA Secretary of State website says the vote count is 100% complete. Ironically, if she has any questions or concerns about the vote count, it would be her own department’s fault for messing it up.
I would also note that all her voters will now vote for Hahn, the frontrunner, not to Huey, the Republican. He will have a major struggle to defeat Hahn, even though she has embarrassed herself a time or two during her career. This is a gerrymandered district favoring democrats and it would be really surprising if Huey pulls it off.
Thanks for posting. I voted for Huey yesterday, didn’t see anything about this in local news this a.m., no surprise.
I wonder how many sheeple are aware we have been without representation in the 36th since mid-February, when Harman announced her resignation. Sure, it was “effective” as of the end of month, but she was “effectively” long gone.
We may not have representation until mid-late July either, due to the anticipated run-off.
Huey is the Tea Party candidate.
Daily Breeze story:
“Hahn awaits runoff rival in 36th District”
Yes, and McClintock prominently endorsed Huey.
This should be good.
:):)
This would be a huge blow to Bowen if she’s pushed out. This “top two” thing makes me ill.
Seems downright un-American, doesn’t it.
You mean there are still REPUBLICANS in CA?? Jeez, I thought with Jerry Brown, Arnold and Grey Davis ruining the state — they all left!!
Yeah. I interviewed Craig recently on our America’s Summit call. He seems like a sincere, pretty darned conservative fellow.
