Gov. Jerry Brown proclaims Sunday second annual Harvey Milk Day
San Francisco Chronicle ^ | May 20 2011 | Marisa Lagos

Gov. Jerry Brown declared Sunday as the state's second ever "Harvey Milk Day," saying the slain politician's "life was cut short far too soon, but his legacy of hope, tolerance, and equality lives on."

Sunday would have been Milk's 81st birthday. The San Francisco supervisor and gay rights leader was shot and killed, as was Mayor George Moscone, by another supervisor in 1978.

"In 1977, Harvey Milk was elected to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, becoming the first openly gay man in the history of the United States to be elected to public office," Brown's proclamation reads in part. "This milestone achievement gave hope to millions of gays and lesbians across the country that a day would come when they could live their lives openly and honestly without fear of discrimination."

In 2008, former Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger vetoed a measure that would have made May 22 a "day of special significance" in public schools. But a year later, when a similar measure -- also by San Francisco State Sen. Mark Leno -- landed on his desk, the governor signed it. A spokesman said at the time that Schwarzenegger's mind was changed by President Obama's awarding Milk the Presidential Medal of Freedom and an Academy Award-winning film about Milk's life.

I wonder if Milk's ties to Jim Jones and the Jonestown massacre will get a mention.

I couldn’t think of what Milk was tolerant of, but you’ve reminded me...murderous cultists.

I suppose it would be unbearably cynical to point out that a Harvey Milk day serves to remind people of the only proven way to get a sodomite out of high office.

Sunday would have been Milk's 81st birthday.

I doubt he would have lived to be 81. Probably would have died of AIDs long ago.

Milk makes a rather unremarkable subject for the silver screen. In his seven years in San Francisco, he made four bids for elective office, only emerging victorious in his last—a 1977 run for city supervisor. For his persistence, Milk jokingly referred to himself as the “gay Harold Stassen.” He served for less than a year. In naming the onetime camera-shop proprietor one of the 100 most important people of the twentieth century, Time conceded, “As a supervisor, Milk sponsored only two laws—predictably, one barring anti-gay discrimination, and, less so, a law forcing dog owners to clean pets’ messes from sidewalks.” Eleven months on the city council hardly seems the stuff of Hollywood legend. So Hollywood invented a legend.

Why this POS radical is celebrated for being killed just because he a fag I will never understand. Some leftist crazy shot him because he thought the Gov't screwed him out of a a decent wage. If Milk was somewhere else, this piece of garbage shooter would have killed another person just the same. No reason to honor this Commie Milk than there is to celebrate a victim of hit and run.

So as I read this, Harvey Milk’s greatest achievement in life was being gay and letting the world know it.

Big deal... yawn

Gotta disagree with you. If Harvey Milk had served out his term instead of being assassinated he would have drifted off into much deserved obscurity rather than martyrdom.

He would have long ago died from AIDS, so it’s stupid to say he would have been 81. I know, I was a young girl in the City when he was shot. I remember the AIDS plague coming through and wiping out pretty much every homosexual man.
