Bill Clinton: We’ve Got to Deal with Medicare (Even Clinton recognizes Medicare is already bankrupt)
ny times ^ | 5/25/2011 | JACKIE CALMES

Former President Bill Clinton, still widely considered one of his party’s foremost politicians, said on Wednesday that Democrats should cut a “reasonable” deal with Republicans on Medicare savings rather than conclude from Tuesday’s upset in a special Congressional election that bashing Republicans on the issue is the key to a party comeback in 2012.

Mr. Clinton’s message, while more politically pointed, followed similar comments on Wednesday morning from Treasury Secretary Timothy F. Geithner as both responded to a Democrat’s victory in a conservative district in upstate New York. The race turned on House Republicans’ budget plan to replace Medicare with a voucher system and dramatically reduce future federal health-care spending.

“You shouldn’t draw the conclusion that the New York race means that nobody can do anything to slow the rate of Medicare costs. I just don’t agree with that,” Mr. Clinton said at a budget forum sponsored by the Peter G. Peterson Foundation. Instead, he said, “you should draw the conclusion that the people made a judgment that the proposal in the Republican budget is not the right one. I agree with that.”

But Mr. Clinton said he feared that Democrats would conclude “that we shouldn’t do anything.”

The Republican candidate in NY lost not because of mediscare but because there was a faux tea party candidate who was really a democrat that was on the ballot as an independent.

This video will provide some future juicy soundbites in political ads. The Dems will not be able to maintain the lies about Ryan’s plan for another 19 months. Not that they can’t lie for that long but a majority of voters will see through it.

Why should Pubbies even attempt to “deal with it” ? Politically its a no win. Let it implode under the ‘Bamster...and let him explain it to the people on the campaign trail next fall...

The big surprise will be the Rats willingness to reform social security. Because it is no longer a cash cow for them to steal money from.

I could see and visualize a campaign ad for Republicans using what Bill Clinton said about Medicare.

Agree

I'm quite certain they'll drastically reduce payments to "rich republicans" like myself with substantial pensions and IRA accounts.

Only a few would collect. Stats say they would always take in more than paid out. The trick...nothing to your heirs...it's called stealing.

No problem — repeal Obamacare. Problem solved.

Better yet, get in a time machine and work for passage of GWB’s reform proposal, which failed because of Harry Reid.

Thanks tobyhill.

I don't have a problem with that. It's way overdue anyway.

Democrats would rather demagogue the issue than actually fix anything.

I found what Clinton said borderline amazing. The funny thing is, he is saying the exact thing that Obama oughta be saying—because there isn’t going to be Medicare in the future unless a bipartisan fix is found today. And it is the president who is supposed to lead when bipartisanship is required.

But Obama just doesn’t care. He only wants that final pile of cash, the $575 billion, to use to buy more votes from his Medicaid/illegals base. And then its on to Obamacare and new and better ways to scam the people.

Clinton, I assume, sees massive white voter flight down the road for the Demoviks once Medicare is understood to be a black hole through which redistribution is achieved. Clinton has looked around more than one corner.
