Mayor Ed Lee quietly signed into law a ban on the unsolicited distribution of Yellow Pages in San Francisco - a regulation that already has drawn a threat of a lawsuit from the trade group that represents the commercial phone book industry.
"While we regret having to take this action and sincerely hope that litigation can still be avoided, we cannot stand idly by as our members' constitutional rights are trampled by a city once known for its tolerance and protection of civil rights," William Champion III, an attorney for the Local Search Association (until recently the Yellow Pages Association), wrote in a letter to Lee.

When we said “Free Press”, we didn’t mean for you.
Now pay your taxes - we need raises. :)
Oh the dead trees!
California won’t quite until they have driven every business out of the state.
I could support a regulation that curtailed the resulting garbage that persists from noone taking the yellow book from the curb. Even in rural areas there are countless flyers (even in bags) that litter the roadside because no resident wants them and they still get distributed a left-curb side by a paid carrier. Maybe make a delivery person clean up the preceeding weeks dropoff if it is still there when they go to deliver another one. But its wrong for there to be 4,5 or more bags cluttering the road’s edge.
However, I stockpile them for the Coming Hard Times.
You know, as TP.
I’ve gotten 6 of the d—m things so far this year! 3 different pairs. Five of them go straight to the recycle bin.
Since when does "Free Press" include the right to place your "Free Press" materials on someone else's property?
I throw all phone books right in the garbage when I get them...
the interweb* gives me everything I need ....
(* interweb.....what ‘Monk’, staring Tony Shaloob calls the internet)
I agree with you. Most uses for the phone book now are for looking up a business. You can’t look up cell numbers in there. I get more phone books now each year than ever before. I usually get three different ones.
perhaps we need a do not deliver list.
BTW they still charge insane fees for ads in those books.
” they still charge insane fees for ads in those books.”
Yup, but a buddy of mine said the best business decision he ever made was buying a full page ad in the Yellow Pages. He claims anything smaller is a waste of money. He says that not only do people just plain see the big ad first, they infer things about the company’s success and status. His business quadrupled the first year he went to a full page ad.
Addendum to my above post;
He has a moving business. Northeastern Ohio. And that was 20 years ago. Maybe not so relevant today!
Seriously.
Sue them for a dollar for my time to carry it to the recycling bin.
It would cost them several thousand dollars to pay me that dollar even if they did not contest the suit.
I suppose this law can be subverted by printing them on blue paper instead?
Nobody goes to Frisco anyway it’s a another ghost town in the making.
Hadn’t thought of that - I’ve been adding a little Duct Tape (can do anything with that) to em and making furniture. Throw a blanket over it add a few cushions - mancave paradise :)
Now, thanks to you, I know that I can use my furniture for something else when it may become necessary :)
When Yellow Page books are left in my driveway I consider it to be littering.
Good idea! My mom told me that during WWII due to rationing in her country, she had to use a cloth, and then wash it out afterwards. I think I would prefer the yellow pages.
