Almost no one noticed, but around George W. Bush's reelection in 2004, the nation crossed a demographic milestone.
From Revolutionary days through 2004, a majority of Americans fit two criteria. They were white. And they concluded their education before obtaining a four-year college degree. In the American mosaic, that vast white working class was the largest piece, from the yeoman farmer to the welder on the assembly line. Even as late as the 1990 census, whites without a college degree represented more than three-fifths of adults.
But as the country grew more diverse and better educated, the white working-class share of the adult population slipped to just under 50 percent in the Census Bureau's 2005 American Community Survey. That number has since fallen below 48 percent.

What makes these results especially striking is that minorities were as likely as blue-collar whites to report that they have been hurt by the recession.
When we all know that any problem hits minorities and women harder.

Worst mis-analysis ever. The only reason that whites are concerned is that reverse discrimination is a zero-sum game, introduced by liberals (who aren't in competition for jobs that require real work) and exploited by minorities who can work the system.

The author appears to take a good deal of satisfaction in the alteration of a racial classification that is and always has been arbitrary at best. The reason is simply that he hopes to ascribe politics differing from his to unworthy racist resentment. It really isn't one bit more intellectually significant than naughty names thrown around on a playground, and taking this sort of stupidity seriously is a waste of time. IMHO.

I don’t understand who this guy is talking about. Whites are not allowed to self-identify, so therefore I don’t know any “white working class” people.
It kind of struck me that in the 18th century when this young country was “majority white”, they didn’t think of themselves that way.
It has been my observation that children who have grown up in rural areas and have been taught agrarian skills/animal husbandry and other survival and self-sufficiency skills are very well prepared to make a living and really don’t need college. I’m an inner-urban street-kid person w/>200 semester hours of useful stuff; I can’t discount the country people whom I now know who teach me a lot. Just sayin’

To libs the problem with many of these whites is that they’ve started acting like urban minorities, breeding out of wedlock, dropping off the grid, etc. When too many whites became welfare queens, welfare was reformed; as a result, the black birthrate dropped and they were displaced by Hispanics (expected to exceed their numbers in 2010, actually doing so in the 2000 census).
Many whites regardless of education level have avoided breeding to try to maintain the lifestyle whites had in the “before-time”; they’ll have the material goods but encounter fewer and fewer people speaking English as a result of those decisions.

Diversity breeds discontent and balkanization. Homogeneity breeds true culture and peace. It’s that way anywhere you look in the world. Diversity is rarely, if ever, a strength. But that’s the line the academics repeat over and over again like a Tibetan monk’s broken record.
I say this as someone who probably heard the word “diversity” repeated no less than several thousand times in my college career to the point of nauseated disgust.
