I chose my new dog Saturday. 22lbs of Beagle/Dachshund. Much to the chagrin of the wife...her name is Honey. She is the ultimate lap dog. She pals around the place with Biscuit, the wife's Papillion.

"A "kerf" is just a groove cut in wood/other material below the entrance hole of a nestbox to help nestlings exit when fledging. Kerfs may prevent fledglings from dying in the box."

Maybe it’s an out west thang. A rabbit joint in wood shop requires a kerf to set the upright into. Seems natural to me that a furrow in the soil is the same kind of thing. Or maybe that’s the word that filtered down through my addled dyslexic mind when I tried to explain the little trenches/ditches/gullies/furrows/kerfs in my little garden :o)
I do think it’s interesting, linguistic wise.
