NASA's next big rocket promises to keep hope alive

NASA plans to announce the heavy-lift plan, formally known as the Space Launch System or SLS, around the time of the July 8 launch of the final space shuttle flight. The decision should keep America’s renowned spaceflight program running, saving the jobs of many of NASA’s hard-to-replace engineers.

Shuttle launch director Mike Leinbach spoke frankly about the space effort's future in remarks he made to his launch team at Kennedy Space Center this month, during preparations for the shuttle Atlantis' program-ending mission.

"The end of the shuttle program is a tough thing to swallow, and we’re all victims of poor policy out of Washington, D.C., both at the NASA level and the executive branch of the government, and it affects all of us — it affects most of you — severely," Leinbach told his team.

“I’m embarrassed that we don’t have better guidance out of Washington, D.C. Throughout the history of the manned space flight program, we’ve always had another program to transition into — from Mercury to Gemini, and to Apollo, to the Apollo-Soyuz test program, to Skylab and then to the shuttle. We’ve always had something to transition into.

“And we had that, and it got canceled and now we don’t have anything, and I’m embarrassed that we don’t. Frankly, as a senior NASA manager, I’d like to apologize to you all that we don’t have that. So there you are. I love you all. I wish you all the best.

“We will press on through this flow and this launch in the way we always do. We’re going to play this game to the final out, and we’ll be done. I just wish you all the best, and again Godspeed to you all. Thank you.”

NASA plans to announce the heavy-lift plan,....

....that they plan to plan down the road to go somewhere when they figure out the plan, if it's not to late to set a date to save the U.S. manned space program.

Oh well, I guess that was the plan.

subsiding a private business is better than subsiding it totally under government control. Eventually we can cut the funding and the business can learn to survive on its own. If we cut funding to the government run program, then its dead, and they have no incentive to cut cost

It was a stupid mistake to halt production of the old Saturn V!

It would have been much better to have developed new spaceship designs to ride on the SatV instead of building the Shuttle.

The SatV could have put us on Mars in the mid 80’s.
(just as Von Braun said)

The best way they can keep hope alive is to land Obama and his whole damned administration on Mars.

NASA with Hansen in a position of authority is an AGW propagandizing boondoggle and a pro-islamist waste of money. Fire that jerkwad, give it a real mission, and fund it. The tech improvements and spinoffs will MORE than recoup the costs. Always have before until they were obastardized...

That's just brilliant. /sarcasm

Please read what you just wrote.

The Musketeers are following the Pied Piper and the country is dropping like a rock in stature, national security and economic power.

And the nice thing for Obama is that along with Muslim outreach Elon Musk stuffs money back into his pocket.

Then OUR money will go into Musk's pocket and so on --- Crony Capitalism!

Oh and here's a nice little ditty that was sponsored by the Musk Foundation Elon Musk sponsored Arianna Huffington's Newweum Inaugural Bash for Obama

The hot ticket for Monday night in Washington is the party being thrown by Arianna Huffington and The Huffington Post at the Newseum on Pennsylvania Avenue. Already I’m hearing reports of scalpers and scammers trying to score tickets.

Plenty of celebs are set to show up to hear will.i.am perform. (Sting and Sheryl Crow are due to join him on a number.) Just yesterday, Mickey Hart and Phil Lesh of the Grateful Dead were added to the guest list. (They’re playing a Ball on Tuesday night.)

Other stars who will somehow get to the Newseum despite closed streets and blocked traffic include Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson, Steven Spielberg and Kate Capshaw, Halle Berry, Sean Diddy Combs, Jon Bon Jovi, and so on. That’s in addition to all the media elite who are in town. Atlantic Philanthropies and The Musk Foundation are sponsoring the night.

Musk knows what side his bread is buttered.

Well, since NASA has publicly going green, Hanson is being protected from those "conservatives."

6/22/2011- The Hill: Conservative group sues NASA for climate scientist’s records

I heard Hanson on a LIBERAL radio talk show chewing out the media for those times they gave "air time" to skeptics (he didn't use the word "skeptics" it was some demeaning term) or had the unmitigated gall to put someone on the same show with him!! --- HIM! --- that they would elevate these skeptics!

It was something to listen to. The man is arrogant, wrong and protected.

Hell, put them on the Moon to dig out the water! Let them produce the fuel to get to Mars.

A lot of stupid mistakes have been made along the way (and many good ones) but the Obama Administration/Bolden/Holdren ruination of NASA is the biggest and the most potentially fatal to our national interests.

If we're not going to bring back Orion, then bring back Sea Dragon. We've got to get serious about establishing a dominant military presence in space. We can roll over and let our enemies bankrupt us (as they are trying to do) or give them all the middle finger salute and show them what a hyperpower does when it's threatened.

NASA won’t be doing anything that will help the U.S. until Obama is turned out in 2012.

Hopefully the military is awake.

First we need an objective.

Then we design the architecture.

Then we build the systems.

What's this about NASA’s new rocket? Obozo and his toady NASA honcho have said Muslim outreach is NASA’s prime job. No bucks, no Buck Rogers.
