17 Jews whose bodies were found at the bottom of a medieval well in England were likely victims of persecution, the BBC reported.
According to the report, the Jews were probably murdered or had been forced to commit suicide.
The skeletons date back to the 12th or 13th Centuries, at a time when Jewish people faced murder, banishment and other forms of persecution throughout Europe. Although the most famous expulsion and persecution was in Spain, England was not far behind. In 1190, the 150 Jews of York, then a center of Torah learning, were burned to death by a church incensed mob, leading to rabbis proclaiming a cherem (prohibition to live in) the city. In 1290, after years of murder and pillage, Edward II banished the Jews from England. Many drowned trying to leave.
Scientists were able to date the bodies using a combination of DNA analysis, carbon dating and bone chemical studies. Seven of the skeletons were successfully tested and five of them had a DNA sequence suggesting they were likely to be members of a single Jewish family.
According to the BBC, the bodies were discovered in 2004 during an excavation of a site in the centre of Norwich. The remains were put into storage and have only recently been the subject of investigation.

This article does not explain how archaeologists know these people were Jewish.

They could have also done a standard DNA ID check similar to the ones you see in CSI, etc. to see who was related.
One story about tracing Jewish origins noted that just about all Ashekenazem are descended from one Jewish woman who lived in early Medieval Europe. At the same time Jewish people are considered very closely related to virtually all other population groups and "isolates" in the Middle East, just like the Palestinians (as distinct from the so-called True Arabs), the Lebanese, a substantial part of the population in Syria and the Turkish coast.
What all of that means is population geneticists can use DNA to pin down most of your relationships even if you don't want to. Figuring out that it was Jewish people tossed down the well was an easy one!

The other possibility is when the Vikings, or other plundering mobs, attacked a village they killed most everybody. If the village was mostly Jewish then they got whacked, if they were Huguenots, then they got whacked.
Difficult to absolutely say it was a hate crime but history would lend credence to the theory.
In the 12th and 13th centuries there were no Viking raids in England and no Hugenots.
Too late for Vikings, too early for Protestants.
But there were always lots of small and medium size civil wars going on. Sort of the standard lifestyle of the time.

I pretty much knew that because of my mothers heritage but the point I was trying to make was the guys that dumped the folks in to the well may not have known or cared they were Jewish.
Antisemitism is not always the reason events happen. I worked with a young Australian neurosurgeon who confided to me one day the nurses were sabotaging him because he was Jewish. I expressed surprise and admitted I did not know he was Jewish and I doubt any of the nurses had even met any Jews let alone were able to recognize them. So I suggested he ask them.
He reported amazement that nobody knew he was Jewish. So I alerted him to the fact that although nobody realized he was Jewish, they did indeed recognize him as a world class prick, which is why the staff was not helpful. Nobody cared he was Jewish.
True enough. It is so easy for people to rationalise their own shortcomings by complaining that any ill will directed to them “must” be because they are Jewish, Black, Irish, Hispanic, Catholic, Muslim, Left-handed, disabled, Mormon, Female, Homosexual etc etc. Depressingly, sometimes that may indeed be the case, but more often than not people react negatively to someone because they are, basically, as you say, world class pricks. :0

Yep, when I was at the Univ of TX in the late 60’s I would meet these hippies who would tell me how shallow the rest of the world/adults/students/profs, etc., were because they rejected the hippies out of hand due of the clothes they wore, the music they liked and directionless life they led.
Well, I told them that I thought they would have been rejected by everybody regardless what they wore because they were examples of piss poor protoplasm with no direction or goals in life. They just deluded themselves in to thinking people rejected them because of their clothes/life style because the alternative, that they were actually, personally, being rejected was a pretty big pill, as in dose of reality, to swallow.
I went back to UT about 20 years later and the same guys who were panhandling on the street corners as cute hippies in 1970 were sill there, except they now looked like burned out bums/wino/drug addicts, or as the politically correct would say, - homeless democrats.
Unfortunately, many of these people have been elected to the California legislature and are still deluded and live in a dream world with paisley whales and peacocks and are wasting my money on piss poor protoplasm.
