That doesn’t make him “from” there. It makes Bachmann sound disingenuous, trying to claim knowlege of some hometown hero who is in fact claimed by Winterset, Iowa. The house is a landmark and there are signs all over town. She just looked like an interloper to people from Waterloo, and angered people from Winterset.
It may not sound important to you as an outsider, but in trying to go back to her “roots” for her announcement, and then undermining it with a false statement and an embarassing one, is going to hurt her in that state.
The good people of Winterset are quite proud of being the birthplace and original hometown of John Wayne. They’ve got a museum, events, all sorts of things. Check it out:
