The idea with the effects on insulin release is that the sweet taste on the tongue stimulates insulin release. If someone's blood sugar is already low followed by a stimulation of insulin release, it will be decreased even more. The drop appears to the body to be indicative of a need for a lot more food energy than is really needed, resulting in a sooner than normal and/or greater than normal level of hunger. Given genetic variability, it may be that some people are much more susceptible to this than others.
