OK, but Oscar Wilde was not American, so will he be in California’s textbook? I’ve thought this over. There are very few whose art truly transcended their personal life: composer Aaron Copeland, J. Edgar Hoover, Truman Capote, Tennessee Williams, Johnny Mathis, Andy Warhol. That’s about it.
