Bill to mandate teaching LGBT history in California moves closer to classroom

Head of the class: San Francisco schools already teach LGBT history, and they’ve done so since 1992.

Prominent figures in LGBT history could play a larger role in classrooms throughout the state after a bill requiring their inclusion into California curriculum passed the state Assembly on Tuesday and headed to the governor’s desk.

The FAIR Education Act by Sen. Mark Leno, D-San Francisco, would require schools to teach at all grade levels the historical contributions of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people.

If signed into law by Gov. Jerry Brown, schools would have to adopt such curriculum after the bill becomes law in
January.

While the bill would not immediately require school districts to purchase new textbooks, it would require them to include “instructional material” on appropriate topics. Textbooks would need to include LGBT figures by the 2015-16 school year.

“It’s no different than instructing students about the historical role of an African-American man by the name of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., fighting for civil rights and being assassinated for his efforts than teaching students about a gay American man by the name of Harvey Milk fighting for every man’s civil rights and being assassinated for his efforts,” Leno said. “Why deny all students the benefit of that knowledge?”

Leno said his bill also seeks to help prevent bullying of homosexual students.

“This is a tragic and increasing phenomenon, and something needs to be done,” Leno said of bullying.

Some districts would need to rewrite their social science curriculum, but The City is already a step ahead of the bill’s requirements. San Francisco Unified School District has offered such curriculum, starting in kindergarten, since 1992, according to Kevin Gogin, the district’s health programs manager.

Opponents of the bill said the required curriculum would “confuse children” and “contradict the moral foundation.”

For instance, Concerned Women for America calls the bill “another step toward complete normalization of transgenderism, homosexuality and bisexuality through the public schools prompting open discussions.” The group calls homosexuality “unhealthy,” especially for males, and complains that the bill contains no opt-out provision.

However, Ardel Thomas, chair of LGBT studies at City College of San Francisco, said the bill’s approval is “terrific.”
“It’s about time,” Thomas said. “Historically, women, people of color, working-class people and people with disabilities have often been silenced. This is incredibly important.”

So this law would preclude anybody from mentioning Harvey Milk running cover for Rev. Jim Jones and his culpability in the deaths of 1,000 mostly Black people?

WHAT exactly are they mandating be taught??? If they are teaching that LGBT’s are a normal segment of the population versus that they are mentally defective deviants, well then we have a problem.

“Women and people with disabilities are silenced.” Well, they taught about Helen Keller when I went to school way back when.

Let see, Billie Rae Junes (bi sexual) invented the milk bottle.. Janet White, (heterosexual) found how to make eggless cake.. Bud Lopex (gay) turned mud into bricks. is every sexual preference going to be identified? this is stupid, California is broke, and they waste time on crap like this.

It would be a vast improvement if they could force the schools to actually teach American history (as opposed to the current Grievance & Oppression Studies).

Honestly: when will citizens wake up and realize that our schools are being used as social laboratories by perverts and communists, with our kids as lab rats?

And people really wonder why our kids are no longer smart enough to compete with kids from Asia who get taught the “3 R’s” and don’t have to put up with this crap in their schools?!?!?

Harvey Milk fighting for every man’s civil rights and being assassinated for his efforts,” Leno said. “Why deny all students the benefit of that knowledge?”

That's a rather offensive comparison considering Milk was a avowed communist and deeply connected with Jim Jones of Jonestown Massacre fame. And he wasn't "assassinated for his efforts" he was shot in a political patronage squabble with a fellow liberal who was rumored to have had a secret homosexual affair with Milk.

How much you want to bet that before long, history is going to be re-written so that every great person in history was gay?

They've already tried to do it with Abraham Lincoln. What's next? George Washington didn't agree to lead the Revolutionary war because he believed in Independence. He just wanted a chance to get away from his "beard" Martha and camp out in the wilderness with those attractive young soldiers?

So when a third grader asks what a lesbian is - what will the teacher say?

So I see it's going to be a bunch of PC lies. Milk was not killed because he was gay. Mayor Moscone (a heterosexual) was killed first by recently resigned supervisor Dan White because he refused to reappoint White to the board. Milk was then killed because he had lobbied hard to prevent White's reappointment. White had also planned to kill two other heterosexuals who had lobbied against his reappointment, but things had gotten hot by then and he fled the building instead.

This complete fabrication of an anti-gay motive will of course be taught in the textbooks.

Funny how they always gloss over the fact that Jim Jones was a card-carrying communist who decided a religious facade would be the best way to spread communism.

Me too but they somehow seem to have forgotten to mention that Keller was a flaming socialist.

BTW - I bet the mandate about LGBT teachings will also conveniently forget that LGBT was considered a mental defect until the 1970’s when they infiltrated the profession enough to have the definition changed.

That's when you have a chapter on Aegean Sea geography.

Lesbians are from Lesbos Island.

Historically, women, people of color, working-class people and people with disabilities have often been silenced.

Assuming that's true, what does it have to do with homosexuals?
