Julie Bass of Oak Park Faces Misdemeanor Charge for Vegetable Garden (in front yard, video)

OAK PARK, Mich. (WJBK) - "The price of organic food is kind of through the roof," said Julie Bass.

So, why not grow your own? However, Bass' garden is a little unique because it's in her front yard.

"We thought it'd be really cool to do it so the neighbors could see. The kids love it. The kids from the neighborhood all come and help," she said.

Bass' cool garden has landed her in hot water with the City of Oak Park. Code enforcement gave her a warning, then a ticket and now she's been charged with a misdemeanor.

"I think it's sad that the City of Oak Park that's already strapped for cash is paying a lot of money to have a prosecutor bothering us," Bass told FOX 2's Alexis Wiley.

Too much government, too many officials looking to throw their weight around.

Julie should get the hell out of the city. I live in a little town about 70 miles west and can do any damn thing I want with my yard. One of my neighbors even has several horses.

"That's not what we want to see in a front yard," said Oak Park City Planner Kevin Rulkowski.

What a fascist loser.I'm sure many would agree that what we don't want to see are these township peons harassing citizens. Hit the pike, pal.

There’s nothing unsightly or unattractive about that front yard. Its actually quite neat and tidy. How much property taxes do they pay? Eff the city govt...they can go suck lemons...probably LIEberals or RINO’s....

Why is this goon from the city of Oak park worried about a veggie garden when there are so many liberal vegetables on the city counsel. So much ignorance, so little time.

super ironic since part of the Detroit plan for massively downsizing the city is urban gardening

“Did you really think we want those laws observed?” said Dr. Ferris. “We want them to be broken. You’d better get it straight that it’s not a bunch of boy scouts you’re up against... We’re after power and we mean it... There’s no way to rule innocent men. The only power any government has is the power to crack down on criminals. Well, when there aren’t enough criminals one makes them. One declares so many things to be a crime that it becomes impossible for men to live without breaking laws. Who wants a nation of law-abiding citizens? What’s there in that for anyone? But just pass the kind of laws that can neither be observed nor enforced or objectively interpreted – and you create a nation of law-breakers – and then you cash in on guilt. Now that’s the system, Mr. Reardon, that’s the game, and once you understand it, you’ll be much easier to deal with.”

I picked 21 pounds of blueberries today.

I have them in 4 pound freezer bags, enough for muffins, pancakes, blueberry dumplings and a few deep dish pies come winter.

I'll pick another crate of berries tomorrow. That should hold me over until spring of next year.

If this is a misdemeanor offense, I guess I’m a hardened felon. Don-o and I just enjoyed a big, red home-grown tomato: July 7, out it on the calendar. I have tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, garlic, squash and Swiss chard growing in my front yard. Right in the middle of the city. Everybody who passes by gives me a big smile. Soft on crime, my neighbors are -— thank God.

Amen to that. Amazing that people tolerate this kind of pushing-into-every-crevice-of-your-life invasive obnoxiousness from petty political officials. Recall that our Founding Fathers thought George III an insupportable tyrant for a piddling tax on tea.
