Climate Conversations - Turning environmental destruction into a crime against peace

LONDON (AlertNet) - Criminalising 'ecocide' - the destruction of ecosystems - is an idea that "just has to come," says David Hart, an environmental lawyer and advocate of 'wild law'.

"[Ecocide] is turning something which humans as a whole regard as an obvious crime into something that is internationally recognised," he said in an interview with AlertNet at an event held in London by Net Impact recently.

At the the event, environmental lawyer Polly Higgins outlined the proposed law of ecocide, which she says should be recognised by the United Nations as a fifth crime against peace alongside genocide, crimes against humanity, war crimes and crimes of aggression.

Hart, a barrister at One Crown Office Row in London whose environmental legal work covers water, waste, air and contaminated land, discussed the principles of wild law, an idea in which law and policy are modelled around ideas to do with nature rather than humans.

"You should not simply be able to trade off cash for nature," Hart said. "If you are proceeding with a project which has natural implications, you should either be able to compensate that simply by providing other areas of nature or the project shouldn't go ahead."

It would be understandable for someone dumping toxic chemicals into a ditch in the middle of the night. But what they are actually after is climate reparations for the past CO2 output of the west. The actual fact is that the CO2 we have emitted so far has been beneficial on the whole. Even if one believes the models that predict catastrophe for future CO2 output, it is China’s fault now.

True. However, the left is everywhere victorious. The left exercises effective control over every major insitution: i.e. government, schools, media, churches, social clubs, businesses, large foundations, health care-you name it. The left is now in the process of mopping up. We conservatives are merely fighting isolated little battles based upon the premise it is better to die standing than upon one’s knees.

Al Gore should be the first person charged with this new crime. Due to him billions of dollars have been wasted on trying prevent an unreal thing. His actions have caused millions to die of starvation and malnutrition. He should convicted and hung.

We can but dream of the day when touting oneself as an “environmental lawyer” will be recognized by all of humankind as a crime against nature and humanity...
