I was a book shelver in our public library all through high school many many years ago. (Not quite stone tablet days, but almost). During the summer, there were kids who were there all day, dirty, hungry, but cool while mom hung out at the bar.
How did we know she was at the bar? The little waifs told us when asked, "where's your mom?"
Aw, dang. I don’t know of any other book stores nearby. I shop at Borders fairly often. Although I’ve heard of liberals hiding the conservative best sellers in the back, I haven’t seen that happen at our local Borders. Last time we were there, we bought Decision Points by President George Bush... it was prominently displayed among the audio books.

Maybe if the ObamaNation had given their customers a tax credit to those who bought books on subjects such as “how to green was my planet”, “diversity 101”, “black history 300,000 whites who died for your sins”, “women’s studies”, “Alger Hiss Was Innocent”, “Joe McCarthy and the Film Blacklist”, “no spies in the state department” and of course HILLARITY AND ME.....they would have still been in business... Just like GE and GM.
As a bookstore, Borders kind of sucked. They *never* had anything I was looking for, and nobody there ever had any interest in helping me locate it, either. But there is a Borders just five minutes from my house — a good place to go drink coffee and work with my laptop. I’ll miss that. (There’s a B&N here but it’s downtown and I always manage to pick up a ticket whenever I go downtown!)
I worked there back in the day when even a small Borders was crammed full of books, titles I’d never heard of and sections of books I didn’t know existed. That was when Tom and Louis still owned it. They sold to Kmart and shortly thereafter the CEOs who knew about squeezing a dime came in and all those titles were gone, replaced by CDs, cards and coffee. It was a wonderful place to shop and work. The employees were a decent group despite a few liberal misfits. I remember one Black Panther wanna-be hired for Christmas help. He’d be at the register reciting his own racist tripe. He did this for several days and we just stared at him. One day he took a smoke break out front and never came back.
