Should Rick Perry conclude that voter discontent has left him an opening to enter the presidential race, the Texas governor would be among the Republican field's most conservative candidates.

Rick Perry rejects the idea of global warming and the theory of evolution, arguing for natural climate variations and intelligent design of the universe.

He branded Social Security and other New Deal safety net programmes "the second big step in the march of socialism," according to a book published last year. The "first step" was a national income tax, which he has said stands alongside the direct election of US senators as a major mistake among the amendments to the US Constitution.

In the just-completed Texas legislative session, Perry's "emergency items" included laws that require a photo ID in order to vote, a sonogram before a woman had an abortion and enforcement of federal immigration laws by local police.

Texas is the only state that has refused to put in place the EPA's new rules regulating carbon dioxide and other heat-trapping gases.

ACORN comprises a mind-boggling 94 different affiliates, that amounts to "a big shell game," a biting Senate Finance Committee study shows.

The study, by the staff of Sen Charles Grassley (R-Iowa), reveals four ACORN charity groups give more than half their revenue to taxable entities that engage in "impermissible lobbying and political activity."

ACORN and it’s subsidiaries for decades have moved taxpayer money into their own pockets and into the left-wing Marxist machine.

Sen Grassley's documents indicate that ACORN's tax-exempt groups----along with its tangled web of allied organizations---- used more than half their charitable and public money in 2006 to pay other ACORN affiliates.

ACORN also appears to have been involved in improper use of pension funds ..... some of the founder Rathke's embezzlment was apparently taken from the pension fund using ACORN's American Express card.

Oh I understand the premise and understand why she did what she did and why that would make her popular. I just don't think it sounds very conservative and I know Obama and his people tried this with the oil companies and everyone went nuts.

The point was, no one is perfect. If you look hard enough at a politicians record you will ALWAYS find stuff you disagree with.

We can only vote for those who are actually running, not some mythical “perfect” conservative that doesn’t exist, never held office (so no record), or isn’t running.

Of the ones that are actually running, or thought to soon be running Perry is our best hope for electing the most conservative person possible this cycle.

I know nothing about Perry. I haven’t watched or followed how he has governed Texas. As a primarily moral/social conservative I am willing to give him a look. I will not outright reject him. One of the nice things about being “undecided.”

I have noticed a disturbing trend here on FR. First, let me state that I would like to see Palin run because she brings excitment and zest to the race. However, on FR if anyone other than Palin is mentioned, a vast majority go out of their way to denigrate the candidate. It is an almost fanatical blindness to anything but Sarah. This is not rational thinking. Palin may be the best candidate, I honestly don’t have a set opinion. However, this thrashing of anyone except Palin is way over the top. On the reverse, I grow tried of the trashing of Palin by proponents of other candidates. There is an alarming lack of civility in the GOP.

Of course, I must accept my share of guilt. I am sincere when I say I will examine the candidate (once all declared) and support the one most morally/socially conservative. However, I WILL NOT bad mouth other real conservatives in the race. Ultimately, it is self defeating. Folks, we are NEVER going to get a candidate will all like 100%. I just want to avoid a candidate that most of us dislike 100% like Romney.

Is/would Perry be a GWB3? I've read several articles that state the two guys don't like each other, specifically over Perry calling out W's policies.

The TX gov. race last year was the Bushes v. Perry and Perry won.

Like I've posted on FR several times, I'm not from TX (and I have noticed the TX FReepers are pretty much split as to whether they like/dislike Perry), but overall, compared to many others on the GOP side and certainly compared to the current douche POTUS, I'd take him any day of the week.

He's not perfect (but then, who is?), but can he win? I suspect “yes” - a repeat of the GWB EV map should do it.

Four more years of Soetoro or a Milt-type and it's game over for the USA.

I also like McCotter and Paul Ryan, but they have flaws: McCotter is pro-Union and Ryan voted for TARP. Those are biggies.

To a British newspaper, somebody who has campaigned for a pro-gun control, pro-abortin, and pro-gay marriage Presidential candidate, and who has spent 10 years trying to help illegal immigrants is a conservative.

I’d put him somewhere slightly ahead of T-Paw. Semi-conservative and fairly unpredictable.

Perry is more predictable than you think. First off, always look at the money that backs him. That controls him. He mentioned a few days ago somebody about God and him running for office, but he admitted yesterday morning that it came down to whether he could get the money together. Last night, there was a meeting between him and about 30-40 of his major donors to discuss whether they could raise the necessary money, since they would be limited to $2,500 a person. Any time he has done something to piss conservatives off, it almost always involves either a Perry donor, or a friend or associate of his who just happens to be working for whatever company was going to benefit.

Second of all, he's got a 10 year track record of speeches and public statements as Governor where he says positive things about illegal immigrants. He even goes so far as to say they are necessary to our economy, although we all know that really they are necessary for his backers who benefit from that labor. You could even argue that him avoiding coming back to Austin to fight for the sanctuary cities bill against his richest donor who was trying to kill it, was another form of him supporting illegals. Now I'm sure the Christian in him genuinely feels concerned for the plight of the illegal immigrant - some of his speeches make it clear that he feels sympathy and responsibility for them, but it's still ultimately driven by his donors.

He is incredibly predictable.

My understanding is that the financial shape of Texas is pretty bad, (like the bottom 40 of the states) its debt is huge second to California and its teetering on default.

So I don’t understand why Perry is touted as a fiscal conservative. To me it seems that he is not.
