Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour (R) criticized the Tea Party wing of the GOP on Tuesday for failing to get behind Republican leadership on a deficit plan.
"Our people have to understand that we can't let the perfect be the enemy of the good," Barbour said.
Barbour said House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) had shown "courage" in the deficit debate by agreeing to compromise in order to raise the debt ceiling.
"In politics, purity is a dead dog loser," he said. "We cannot go out with the idea that we're going to be pure, or we're going to do nothing."
Speaking on conservative Laura Ingraham's radio show, Barbour warned that only compromise would produce a "good" deficit deal.
"If I had my way, if I were a dictator, we'd have no tax increases," he said. "But Republicans control one half of one third of the government."
Barbour said Tea Party Republicans such as Sen. Jim DeMint (R-S.C.) needed to get behind Boehner's effort, rather than clinging to the "Cut, Cap and Balance" Act which passed the House but "isn't going anywhere in the Senate."
DeMint criticized Boehner's plan as "essentially the same thing" as Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid's (D-Nev.) plan on FOX News Monday evening. Both plans "are political deals, not debt solutions," he tweeted.
The two-step plan offered by Boehner on Monday would raise the debt ceiling $1 trillion for a few months and make $1.2 trillion in cuts as the first step. Step two would appoint a commission to recommend additional deficit-reduction proposals for Congress to vote on and require a vote on a balanced budget amendment to the constitution.
DeMint pledged to continue working to pass the "Cut, Cap and Balance" Act, which conditions raising the debt ceiling on immediate spending cuts, capping annual spending and voting on a balanced budget amendment.
The Cut, Cap and Balance coalition, representing more than 100 Tea Party and conservative activist groups, also on Monday released a statement opposing Boehner's plan. The group said it could not support Boehner in part because it feared a Congressional commission would "make it easier to raise taxes than to institute enduring budget reforms."
However, the Tea Party movement may be more divided in its response on a local level. One local group in Boehner's home district organized a rally to show support for the Speaker on Monday that drew a crowd from throughout southwest Ohio and northern Kentucky, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer.
Ingraham, who urged her viewers to call DeMint and other Republicans urging them to support Boehner's plan, said she agreed with Barbour's message that Tea Party leaders needed to be told, "Don't stab your guy in the back."
“Haley Barbour” and “Karl Rove” the 2 Fat Bastards of the RINO GOP who need to STFU!
Barbour: “we can’t let the perfect be the enemy of the good”
hmmm....where have we heard that before? That’s what Obama was saying during the Obamacare debate.
Barbour is not a malefactor like Rove, he is just too much the party loyalist.
When did the two government parties decide that only two “leaders” were to have faces and voices anyway? Disgusting, weak and not representation.
Same difference.
Adding to the injury, Barbour and The Speaker insult our intelligence. We are skating on the edge of a total and unmitigated disaster.
Time to shrug.
Barbour wants to make sure that it is business as usual in the beltway.
The GOP establishment sure has come up with a deficit plan. There is no deficit reduction in it. Debt increase now in exchange for “cuts” later. The cuts however insignificant are optional and not binding.
Jefferson's advice was better: "Bind them down from mischief by the chains of the Constitution."
"I am for a government rigorously frugal and simple, applying all the possible savings of the public revenue to the discharge of the national debt; and not for a multiplication of officers and salaries merely to make partisans, and for increasing by every device the public debt on the principle of its being a public blessing." --Thomas Jefferson to Elbridge Gerry, 1799. ME 10:77
I’m with DeMint. Any increase of the debt ceiling simply allows more wildly irresponsible spending, followed by yet another plea to raise the debt ceiling. It has to end.
It doesn’t hurt for the “Bad Cop” to show up and demonstrate that Obama could be faced with options more objectionable to him, if he doesn’t take what’s offered now.
Party loyalty runs deep for both Repubs and Dems.
Party loyalty is meaningless if Congress allows this debt ceiling to keep going up and discretionary spending to keep going up irrespective of revenue and any and all logic.
If the traditional Congresscritters had their way, Social Security and Medicare would pay out $10 dollars per month to seniors, and all the SS/Med paycheck withholdings from current workers would be used to pay for paychecks for Federal government employees in bureaucrat jobs with six-figure salaries and roads and bridges back home with their name on them.
The new Congressmen who were elected by We the People know that they’re there for 1 purpose; deconstruct the bureaucracy before the Federal government goes broke.
How about this: the Democrats and liberal, establishment Republicans quit stabbing the American taxpayer in the back.
Forget Barbour. Purity couldn’t begin to turn back what Obama has done to this country! Boehner’s plan silences the new Republican caucus we installed in the midterms and replaces them with a “commission”. A commission then silences us! The 6 Billion is paltry and does not earn a cave. Hold the dang line!

There comes a time when you reach the moment of truth; when compromise isn’t an option.
You have cancer, and you find out the medicine to cure you alive will cost all of your savings. Do you:
(1) spend ALL your savings, cure yourself, and live
(2) compromise by spending only HALF your savings, only buying HALF the medicine you need to cure yourself, and die
?
So do I, and Rush isn't too excited about this new plan either. The CCB seems to only be the right plan...it actually cuts, caps and balances and stops the goons in DC from their continued destruction of this country, they've done on purpose.
DeMint’s response to it:

Too bad our lecturer-in-chief, who threw out an obscure Jefferson quote the other day, didn't understand as clearly as did America's Founders, that debt and deficit by government officials mean slavery and "servitude" for individuals.
"To preserve [the] independence [of the people,] we must not let our rulers load us with perpetual debt. We must make our election between economy and liberty, or profusion and servitude. If we run into such debts as that we must be taxed in our meat and in our drink, in our necessaries and our comforts, in our labors and our amusements, for our callings and our creeds, as the people of England are, our people, like them, must come to labor sixteen hours in the twenty-four, give the earnings of fifteen of these to the government for their debts and daily expenses, and the sixteenth being insufficient to afford us bread, we must live, as they now do, on oatmeal and potatoes, have no time to think, no means of calling the mismanagers to account, but be glad to obtain subsistence by hiring ourselves to rivet their chains on the necks of our fellow-sufferers." --Thomas Jefferson to Samuel Kercheval, 1816. ME 15:39
"I deem [this one of] the essential principles of our government and consequently [one] which ought to shape its administration:... The honest payment of our debts and sacred preservation of the public faith." --Thomas Jefferson: 1st Inaugural, 1801. ME 3:322
"I sincerely believe... that the principle of spending money to be paid by posterity under the name of funding is but swindling futurity on a large scale." --Thomas Jefferson to John Taylor, 1816. ME 15:23
"[With the decline of society] begins, indeed, the bellum omnium in omnia [war of all against all], which some philosophers observing to be so general in this world, have mistaken it for the natural, instead of the abusive state of man. And the fore horse of this frightful team is public debt. Taxation follows that, and in its train wretchedness and oppression." --Thomas Jefferson to Samuel Kercheval, 1816. ME 15:40
If we’re not skillful here, we could let the democrats hang the Obama economy around the GOP’s neck in 2012.
This is 99% political.
The true colors of these RINOs is coming thru. No doubt who to get rid of.
