California's July revenue drop prompts fear of more school cuts
Sacramento Bee ^ | 8/10/11 | Kevin Yamamura

Posted on 08/10/2011 9:34:13 AM PDT by SmithL

California has already fallen behind the revenue hopes that Gov. Jerry Brown and lawmakers used to solve the budget deficit in June, raising fears Tuesday that deeper education cuts may be in the state's future.

Controller John Chiang said for the first month of the new fiscal year, California missed its $5.2 billion July general fund revenue target by $538.8 million, or 10.3 percent.

To help bridge the deficit in the face of Republican tax opposition, Democrats relied on an optimistic assumption that California would receive $4 billion more than previously forecast through June 2012.

Under the budget agreement, if revenues fall short, California will ask districts to shorten the K-12 school year by up to seven more days, as well as impose a fee hike at community colleges. Other cuts would hit public safety, universities and social services.

"While we hope for better news in the months ahead, every drop in revenues puts us closer to the drastic trigger cuts that could be imposed next year," Chiang said in a statement.

The Department of Finance has until December to determine whether the state is on track to hit its revenue target.

Maybe they should send all of the ILLEGALS back to Mexico where they belong?

Would save BILLIONS and give back jobs that Americans DO want.

This is the real reason they starting borrowing earlier. They are going to run out of money sooner than they thought.
There is no solution for CA without solving the illegal problem. There is no solution for CA without reducing the enviro regulations. There is no solution to CA problem without breaking the grip of the Unions on the Rat politicans.
There is no solution to the CA problems.
We are on a path to exit. My wife gave up months ago..it has taken me a while. It won’t be easy.

What, you mean some useless administrator might have to take a pay freeze this year instead of a 10% salary increase? Or might have to work more than 6 hours a day?

Public schools are more like 19th century. The best thing that could happen to this country would be for government to be out of education altogether.

I lived in Seattle since 1966. Just completed my move to a small farm and home in central KY last weekend. It has been a two year ordeal, but well worth it.

“I have an idea...let’s build a new NFL stadium!”

Yeah, and then we can build a high speed railway connecting the stadium to...somewhere.

Hey, we’re beginning to “mature” and think like idio...er...liberals.

“Revenue hopes”? - Well, like Dad always said, “Hope in one hand and sh_t in the other and see which hand fills up first.” Never shake hands with a California Democrat...their hands are full of sh_t.

I agree!
You have the KhanAcademy option. You have private school options. You have trade school options. The Government should get far removed the education system. They wreck everything they touch.

Now that we have Governor Moonbeam back on board, with the added free bonus of senility, let's revisit the decades long slide into the most inept State government in the U.S.
Let's start by revisiting this post from 2009 :

Leave it to McClatchy and the stupid-assed Bee to FINALLY start talking about "what services we're going to keep and which we will jettison".

I can't stop laughing!

As far back as I can remember, there is not a single tax increase or new Department of the State bureaucracy, that the Bee didn't love --- and support enthusiastically.

They think nobody's noticed?

Read it and laugh with me...!

But they promised it was balanced! This shortfall was unforeseeable! It's unexpected!

Republicans fault for not wasting taxpayer's dollars and letting temporary tax increases expire.

/s

That 1% additional sales & use tax wouldn't be a pimple on this shortfall.

It could be +$10m out of -$1,169m. If you assume an added $10m monthly, it would take until perhaps March 2012 (or later) just to break even on what it would've cost to pay for that special election looking at 2003 special election estimates at the SOS site ($52-66m or $63-78m in 2010 dollars).
