ANCHORAGE, Alaska (Reuters) - A volcano that has been erupting for several days in Alaska's Aleutian Islands may be preparing for a more explosive event, scientists said on Wednesday.
Cleveland Volcano, a 5,676-foot peak located on Chuginadak Island, about 940 miles southwest of Anchorage, has been in low-level eruption since the end of July, the Alaska Volcano Observatory said.
"An eruption for us is any time that magma is coming up from the surface in the ground," said John Power, scientist in charge at the observatory, a joint federal-state operation. "This is very much happening here."
Chuginadak Island is uninhabited and the volcano has not posed an immediate hazard to anyone or affected air traffic, even though it lies directly in the North America-to-Asia flight corridor used by major airlines, Power said.

This is brilliant strategy and timing, reminiscent of Reagan!
Yes, I taking an Alaska cruise in September, I want cool wet weather.
My son is on a rafting trip in Alaska right now, but it doesn’t sound like this is even big enough or close enough that they would see it. He’s going down the Copper River with his Boy Scout troop.
Wow.
Wifey is headed there late August, I have been more than a few times,, great scenery.. and real moose burgers and salmon.. ;-]
Go to the Cleveland Volcano . . . see if you can see Russia from there.

A good omen?
I saw that,, most of the time the weather is lousy there so Mt Cleveland and cousin view is obscured.
I remember the Redoubt event in particular because we lost a soldier in my unit who was traveling back to Anchorage from Ft. Greely in a military vehicle accident.
The volcanic ash was terrible to try to drive in.
Omen?
Nyaa..Tectonic stuff happens.
Precursor? lots of little fellas in that neck of the woods .. and they do puff occasionally.. the Pacific plate is just adjusting itself.. so far so good.
I’d forgotten how many volcanos were up there.. We have never been caught in the ash , so far.
Sorry to hear of the loss of the soldier.
a slight hiss..

We’re flying to AK on Friday night. Bummer that we will not be able to see the volcano. OTOH, we will not be in the path of the ash, I guess, if we are coming up from LA.
As to the posted pictures— Wow. Do we live on a great planet or what?
