He was scared, but the 12-year-old Boy Scout still knew what to do when he got lost during a Utah wilderness outing: He built a shelter made of tree branches and wood to get through a cold night and he covered himself in dirt to stay warm...

Great job Jared.
TRAIL THE EAGLE TRAIL THE EAGLE CLIMBING ALL THE TIME,FIRST THE STAR AND THEN THE LIFE WITH ALL YOUR BOOZEMS SHINE KEEP CLIMBING,BLAZE THE TRAIL AND WE WILL FOLLOW HARK THE EAGLE’S CALLLL ON BROTHER’S HONOR TILL WE’RE EAGLE SCOUTS
Two Eagle Scouts here. So proud. I hope you join their ranks.
You were probably attracting insects that the bats found appetizing.
I was pretty sure this would be a successful search. I’m reading it to my troop Monday and we’re going to discuss what he did right and what he did wrong.
Right-Shelter, mud bed
Wrong-No buddy system, no ten essentials in the wilderness, kept walking when he knew he was lost. 5 miles is a long way to go. Rescue would have been over 10-15 hours sooner had he just parked.
Glad for a happy ending, a great adventure and proper training for survival.
I don’t think they have cell towers out there...
Actually, wouldn’t the dirt sort of clog the pores and keep the body heat in ..??
If so, that’s a good thing to remember.
Blessings also flow from being prepared.
Our cell phones do not work in some places we go to get away from it all.
“Blessings also flow from being prepared.”
That’s in the vein of my parents’ insistence that “the Lord will provide” to rationalize their abysmal financial choices/planning throughout their lives. They ended up with nothing and, at the risk of being blasphemous, my sister and became “the Lord” and provided for them until my dad died, and we take care of Mom.
The Lord gave people brains and the ability to use logic.
Any boy who starts at 10 1/2 in BSA will by the time he is 12 be able to survive in the wilderness on his own for several days. If the troop follows the program.
I am not surprised at the outcome here. This boy was well trained. BSA is the absolutely best program a young boy can be involved in. By the time he gets done at age 18, most will be a completely self-reliant young men ready to take on the challenges the world will throw at them.
4 sons 4 Eagles.
2 are active duty Marines, one a fireman/paramedic, and another starts college in August as an Army ROTC cadet.
Good news. Surely there’s a badge for building a shelter and suviving the night. Of course, he should have minded and walked with a buddy.
“Boy, do we need Boy Scouting.” - President Gerald Ford, in a P.S.A. .
My privilege is to preside over Eagle Courts of Honor.
I will do so again Tuesday.
I no longer sit on Eagle Boards of Review but that is one of the best jobs in the Scouting program. They never cease to impress
In Utah the scout was likely Mormon. It is fashionable to bash Mormons here and I will not. They have embraced Scouting as a good way to enrich the lives of boys.
Fantastic. Congratulations.
Our oldest works for P & H out of Gillette.
The younger one is a fifth year senior at Thee OH-IO
State University.
We do not have a like button. But I press one for you. I like!!!!!
Thanks Inispiring!
This kid is truly amazing. There was a guy on my block who got lost in a forest preserve and barely managed to survive by using karate to catch a porcupine and a baraccuda.
Good summary. My first thought was, “Why did he leave his buddy?” I’ll bet if I mentioned this to my two Life Scout sons (and what are they doing up at this hour, anyway?) they’d say the same thing.
why alter the title line(alive)
I have been scoutmaster for 12 years, assistant SM for 3 years before that. It is a great job and a great way to have a positive influence on boys. Low pay, but great rewards....
