Anoka-Hennepin school district stands by gay 'neutrality' policy

It's one sentence. And it has thrown Minnesota's largest school district into the national debate on gay rights.

"Anoka-Hennepin staff, in the course of their professional duties, shall remain neutral on matters regarding sexual orientation including but not limited to student led discussions."

Controversy over that line within Anoka-Hennepin schools' Sexual Orientation Curriculum Policy has hung over the suburban district for more than two years. The policy itself is the only known one like it in Minnesota.

Parents of students who are gay, bisexual or transgender, or perceived to be, say the directive leaves their children vulnerable to bullies. Teachers say it is confusing to interpret. LGBT-rights groups are suing to kill it. But the school district - bolstered by community members who say discussions on sexual orientation are best handled at home - stands by it.

“Dumping the policy would allow more honest talk about gender and sexual identity, said Jefferson Fietek, a teacher and Gay Straight Alliance adviser at Anoka Middle School for the Arts. It would help teachers explain to students why it's wrong to use anti-gay slurs beyond just saying “knock it off” the way some do now.”

Kind of gives away the whole agenda right there. They want complete acceptance and nothing short will do.I personally feel they should be free to suffer all the humiliations and ass-whoopings we normal folk had to go through as teenagers and not be spared from the school of hard knocks.

I grew up in District 11 (Anoka-Hennipen) and graduated from Anoka Sr High almost 25 years ago.

They need to stick to their guns. Giving in to the gay Rights maifa hasn't worked very well anywhere else it has been tried.

Seems to me this isn’t about bullying, it’s about fags wanting to be special and legitimizing an unnatural lifestyle. A neutrality policy in no way prevents a teacher or staff member from stopping a bully or preventing an assault regardless of the orientation of the “victim”.

The most recent standardized test scores for Minnesota high school students showed
no real progress.

Math scores raced ahead by 1% from last year, reading scores were also up a whopping
1% while writing scores fell 1%.

89% of students passed the writing exam on the first try while 79% passed the reading
exam the first time.

Math scores, however, were really in the toilet, with only 59% of students passing
on the first try. This in a world where technological innovation is the key to prosperity
and national security.

Even worse, the achievement gap between white students and students of color was
a massive 30% or more.

Only 54% of black students passed the reading exam.

Sadly, only 24% of black students passed the math exam.

Yet they want to focus on gender politics instead of learning what they need to know get a job or get a life.

...say the directive leaves their children vulnerable to bullies.

Take your kid to a shrink and stop encouraging them. IMHO, this new "gayness" gig is a fad. A way for society's little losers to rebel with their "in your face" attitude.

50 years ago, they would have gotten their heads chopped off for NOT saying they were against the gay lifestyle.

25 years ago, everyone would have yawned...of course we’re neutral on it, it’s not our job.

0 years ago, they get blasted for not being in full support of all things gay.

This my friends, is what happens when conservatives sit back and let the libs run things in the trenches. I know, I know, the school you send your kids to is just “wonderful”, it’s all those other big, bad, schools that are messing up the country.

There is no such thing as gay neutrality. Support is support.

I agree with you that the school district should keep its neutrality stance, but I disagree that other students should feel free to administer humiliations and ass-whoopings as part of the "that's real life" theme.

First of all, schools should take a stricter line on maintaining standards of courtesy and decent behavior at all levels. If school teachers and school principles had a free hand to require high standards of discipline, they could (and should) bar ALL sexual displays and "acting-out" (by anybody) and suppress anybody (anybody!) who engages in verbal aggression, provocation, taunting, etc.

Keep in mind that a lot of kids who get targeted for being gay, aren't gay: they're 'perceived' as gay. Years ago, when I was teaching 7th and 8th graders, I noted that it was the smaller, slighter-built, even more bookish 12-13 year old boys who were aggressed against verbally, even by girls, who were unmerciful. I suppressed that fast.

The "school of hard knocks" is nothing but thuggery, junior division.
