Gallup: Obama job rating sinks below 40% for first time

President Obama's summer woes have dragged his approval rating to an all-time low, sinking below 40% for the first time in Gallup's daily tracking poll.

New data posted Sunday shows that 39% of Americans approve of Obama's job performance, while 54% disapprove. Both are the worst numbers of his presidency.

Obama's approval rating has hovered in the 40% range for much of 2011, peaking at 53% in the weeks following the death of Osama bin Laden.

But Americans' view of his job performance continued to tick downward as the debt-ceiling debate heated up. By the time he signed legislation averting a federal default, he was mired in the low-40% range.

The polling setback comes as the Republican race to unseat him has kicked into overdrive. The past week has been dominated by the activity in Iowa ahead of the Ames Straw Poll, and the entrance of a new contender in Texas Gov. Rick Perry. The candidates have routinely assailed Obama's leadership in appealing to conservative activists who dominate this stage of the nominating contest.

39% in the first term 15 months before an election.

I wonder if any past 2 term presidencies were near 39% 15 months before an election.

Not low enough yet, but it makes my day to see him hit an all-time low...so far.

Independents are no longer afraid of being called racist for pointing out the obvious.

Worst for the country but not necessarily for those who have the intent to destroy it. He may be a true success story to them.

Amazes me that he is above 5%, but since 2008, there are suddenly a lot of socialists in Amerika that want to spread the wealth around.

During a conversation with a ‘Progressive’, he claimed Obama was the most conservative President since Eisenhower!! Man, are these folks insane, or what?

Hopefully there will be a Democrat primary so we can all witness the Leftists defending and advancing the Socialist agenda.

The Texas economic model has existed since before the Tea Party evolved out of citizen’s concerns. It has been successful for the state. Obviously, Perry has helped make that economic model work.

The Texas economic model is now generally endorsed by many republicans at the national level, including Tea Party representatives, who have adopted it as their own. That includes Michelle Bachman, bless her heart.

The other large state economic model is California’s. It has failed at the state level. Obama and the democrats have largely adopted that model for the national level, where it is failing as well.

Does not seem to be much of a contest does it?

Bush’s fault.

...and hurricanes, and earthquakes, and nuclear meltdowns and the Tea Party and ATMs and the oil spill in the Gulf and the two-party system and people not spending recklessly like he does and racism and the Tooth Fairy and people who won’t eat their peas and and and bitter clingers and and and...

I suspect that in 2012 many independents, as well as some liberals, in order to save face, will claim to have voted for his reelection when in reality, they will have voted against him, or not voted at all.

Ask, and ye shall receive:

Bottom line is that poll-wise, Obama isn't doing much worse than Clinton at this point in his presidency, and Clinton wasn't dealing with 9% unemployment.

As George Will has said, two of greatest days in baseball were the day Frank Robinson was hired as the first black manager and the day he was fired for being a bad manager.

Ditto Obama.

Truman fell faster and harder, but he’s a bit of a special case, seeing as he wasn’t elected the first time.
