RESEDA, LOS ANGELES -- The scores are in for Southern California students who took the annual STAR exam.
Despite cutbacks and layoffs, scores are up for the ninth straight year.
They're at their highest levels since the testing began.
At a 10th-grade physiology class at Reseda High School, reading and language skills are combined with mathematics, and there are improved results in the latest statewide Standardized Testing and Reporting (STAR) examinations given to nearly 5 million students in grades 2 through 11.
"Despite the cuts we are seeing that kind of significant progress. It's been steady over the last nine years of the STAR test," said California Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson.
"We still have an achievement gap for Latino-Californians and for African-American Californians that's troubling, very deeply troubling, and needs to be attacked square on," said Torlakson.
The improvement in the list scores come despite some of the worst budget cuts in education in the state's history. The superintendents point out what might have happened if they'd been fully funded.

Yeah Right!
They were probably forced to use second-hand Saxon Math books. If so, that would explain their dramatic improvement in math scores.
(hopefully, big-education doesn’t find that out, or they’ll have to sue New-Age math again)
Hmmm, California, eh?
Scores up?
Ya mean that the average SAT math score has exceeded double digits?
And the average verbal has exceeded one digit?
The dirty little secret is that the schools spend a week or two studying for these tests, the regular curriculum be damned.
My take is the kids are probably more stupid today than they were when these tests were implemented. Remember, the teachers hated these things and told us exactly what they were going to do. Now they’re doing it.
"Latino-Californians" and "African-American Californians"
What's missing from one of these? Oh yeah: "American."
What could it mean? Something to think about.
“What’s missing from one of these? Oh yeah: “American.” What could it mean? Something to think about.”
As Americans flee California, the “Latino-Californians” and “African-American Californians” now have their scores pitted against Clifornia’s new middle class: Asians. Good luck addressing that achievement gap!
Until vouchers are in place to secure healthy competition, I will never believe a news story that has American students (of any ethnicity) truly learning more.
