Middletown Mobile Home Park Has Feral Cat Problem (Why neutering doesn't work!)

The Creekwood Mobile Home Park in Middletown is crawling with cats. Residents have complained about property damage and foul odors and want something done. Past attempts to get rid of the cats have had mixed results. The latest attempt has some animal rights activists crying foul. Local 12's Joe Webb has the story from Middletown.

A year ago, a non-profit group came here to Creekwood Mobile Home Park and trapped, neutered and returned more than 80 cats to control the growing cat problem. Residents say that worked, for a while. Now, they've taken cat population control into their own hands.

You don't have to look long to find a cat at Creekwood. If you live here, some say they've become a real pain. "Pain in my neck is when I walk out here and there's 5 or 6 cats up in my swing or lying on my porch and you can't get them to leave. You scoot, scoot, scoot and they won't go. They look at you like you're crazy."

"After we had 'em all fixed, it calmed down a bit. Now they're all back. Not being fed and taken care of the way they should. We got new cats that aren't fixed so there's kittens. It's just overrun with cats."

Flower beds have become litter boxes.. crawl spaces have become cat spaces... vegetable gardens urinals. The non-profit S.C.O.O.P. (Save Cats and Obliterate Overpopulation) feeds the cats and tries to maintain the size of the cat colony. but some residents wanted more. "We do have a cat problem. One of our residents complained to our manager. She gave him a trap. He's been trapping the cats and according to him he's been taking them to a farm."

The trapper says he's relocated just 8 cats. The S.C.O.O.P. people think more have disappeared. They also say you can't just relocate cats... it doesn't work. "It's dumping. They removed cats from a managed colony and it's dumping cats. It's illegal to do that." "Certainly it's a problem but the humane method is to create stable colonies that are healthy by spaying and neutering and that's what we've tried to do." Scoop and the park owner had not spoken when we interviewed them. Brenda Smith hopes they work something out. "As long as they stay off my porch I'm happy." There is no organized cat population plan in the works, so for now, the trap is set. The S.C.O.O.P. people say it *is* legal to trap the cats on private property as long as they are not injured and taken to a legitimate shelter. They discourage that because at most shelters, the cats would be euthanized.

Exactly the reason why I depopulated the feral cats around my home using a method called "trap and eliminate." My old widow neighbor was feeding them and they were breeding in her garage. You can't fix stupid.

I use a .177 pellet out of an old Crosman 760 pump air rifle. Ten pumps and a tiny amount of noise when I pull the trigger.

Shoot, Shovel, and Shut up.

This solution requires the cooperation of the local health dept. We had a Chinese carryout in our community that I loved. When a competitor opened an all you can eat Chinese buffet accross the street the health dept was called to inspect the carryout. They found dressed cats in the freezer and were summarily closed, permanently. I was devastated but learned an important lesson. When I like a Chinese restaurant too much there is probably a good reason.

“Takes them to a farm,” he said.
Yeah, sure.

Shoot, Shovel, and Shut up.

I've heard that 22 Birdshot is very noisy but effective.

Since it's against the law, I'd never encourage that use of a 22.

My preference is at least a 410, if you're gonna shoot'em , kill'em.

A .22 is very effective. So are hounds, coyotes, bob cats and the fan on a ‘98 Dodge pick up in winter. My wife got 4 or 5 last winter.

the true hunting pellet guns like Gammo are good out to 30 yards and actually have more energy and velocity than a .22 rifle round close in. when in season we hunt rabbits with it, and it is totally effective at 30-35 yards.

i dont think it makes much noise either.

22 bird shot will not work but a 22 short is very quiet and effective!

Take them to the Appalachian Trail and dump them at the shelters. The mice are worse than the bears there.

If you use coyotes to get rid of the cats what do you use to get rid of the coyotes?

A .22 is very effective and so is an old pickup truck if you are using the carbon monoxide method.

Shoot, shovel and shut-up is the correct method. Idiot cat lovers will have the law all over you in an effort to save “fluffy.”

I always use Havahart traps and of course take them to a farm. LOL!

I’d much rather have feral cats around than worthless filthy feral dogs. At least cats will reduce the rodent population whereas feral dogs are good for nothing except target practice.

Dogs and children can also get into the antifreeze and I prefer to do them in quickly.

Yeah because there are just so many feral dogs...

I prefer to not have either. But hey, if you’re a fan of living in a litterbox then more power to ya!
