(snip) At four months short of age 17, Carl made a decision that altered his life; he opted to enlist in the Marine Corps. He ranked high on his aptitude tests and passed the physical, he said, and took the oath on April 17, 1977.
Then, when he turned 17, "they came and got me. At midnight on his birthday, "I was off the bus and following the yellow footprints" on the pavement at the Parris Island, S.C., Marine base, he said.
Once the tough training began, he said, he immediately second-guessed his decision, shocked by the reality of boot camp life.
But Carl toughed it out, and after boot camp he was sent to combat demolition school at Fort Irwin, Calif.
"I learned how to blow things up, he said. "C4 (plastic explosive), Claymore mines, anything that would blow up" he mastered.
After about 14 months as a Marine, Carl went home on leave to see his mother. He also ran into an abusive male cousin, who was physically well developed but had grown up a bully.

I'm not a member of our military, I'm just an army wife, but even I can see through this BS story.
I HATE it when jerks impersonate members of our military. ESPECIALLY when they say that they've committed murder and that the military didn't care.
Marines CANNOT become SEALs. ONLY servicemen in the Navy can become SEALs.
What a crock of S***. What is he trying to say he’s a Murderer ergo all seals are murderers. This Doggie don’t hunt.
Marie. Thanks for posting for me.
By the way. There’s no such thing as “just” an Army wife. If our adversaries think our military is tough... they haven’t met our wives.
Bless you and all our military families.
Interesting comments. Looks like someone got exposed. I doubt any actual member of SEAL Team 6 would go around in a shirt advertising it. I read here a while back that a good way to spot a fake SEAL is look for the ones wearing SEAL t-shirts or having big SEAL stickers on their car.
Thanks for re-posting with original title and text from the source.
This story is bull s#it. It is a blending of two movies from the 1940 with modernizations.
I think that the part the infuriated me the most was when he claimed that he shot his bully cousin three times for insulting his manhood and the Marines didn’t think a thang about that.
last time I checked, our service members were held to a HIGHER standard than average Americans - no excuses.
Glenn Barr either needs to learn more about the military so he can do some fact checking or go back to school and complete his degree in basket-weaving.
Not a problem. Always willing to help a brother out.
I do think it's cute when I call hubby at work and I hear, "Sergeant Major! It's your CO!"
Fake SEALS are old-hat, but what’s really revealing is how such a big story would be published without the tiniest modicum of fact-checking.
Anyone in J-school should drop-out and put on their pajamas —a huge promotion.
A journalist is anyone who can TYPE —did you realize YOU, too, are a jouralist? Me, too.
There's too many pieces of fiction in this story to even know where to begin.
My bet would be he's never served at all.
I’ve noticed journalists and editors, even in local papers, have stopped fact checking and even simple checking of grammar and spelling. Quality has been going downhill fast.
How convenient is that? The writer of this article should be shot for being so stupid as to believe the crap from this guy.......
My son said that the most insulting part of the article was how poorly written it was.
Some huge give-aways:
1. Marines VERY rarely become SEALs —99% were always USN.
2. Modern SEALs don’t use M-60’s.
3. The notion that SEAL Team 6 could be commanded by a TRUCK DRIVER is puzzling in the extreme.
4. Shooting someone to death in a murder could prove a l’il hiccup in a military career.
Yes. This is total Bull Sh^t.
